I need your suggestions for controlling the late coming of the employees n my office. I am the HR Manager working here in one of the IT Company and recently joined here. Employees here are of very casual nature. Although i have made policies on attendance and late coming . still some of them are not following it seriously. There are some employees who just ping and inform they are not well and would not be attending office. In such case how should i decide whether the employee is genuinely not well or just making excuse. My director is asking me to do something on this. what should i do. If i sanction their leave, my director doesn't accept it.
Please suggest.

First collate statistics of late coming department wise.
Secondly incorporate HODs of concerned department in making late coming policy
One day in a week upto 15 minutes late is acceptable.
Policy which involves whole company should be made and approved at director level where in all details -arrival departure, log in/out, leaving premises during working hrs, offs etc should be discussed and made aware to all and then enforced.
Employees can and do fall sick suddenly and some do make false excuses of sickness.
Whether Medical certificate is mandatory is again a policy decision,if some one is absent suddenly without notice.
Discuss and incorporate.
Enforcement of timings is a group effort of HR/HOD/employees together.Single handed changes will not be effective.
Disciplinary actions can be take for habitual latecomers, after enforcing policy for late coming, marking 1/2 day C/L or 1 day CL etc.

Do you have a bio-metric attendance punching system? If not, try to convince your management and instal the same. Instances of late coming/early going shall automatically reduce. Simultaneously, maintain a late coming/early going register and put the same on your table. Members who arrive office than the stipulated time, shall record their time of arrival and put their signature in the register. Make this as a practice. Very soon, you can find the difference.
All the best.
