Dear All,
I am working in a Software Company of North India as a HR, I am the only HR person here and reporting directly to the directors, we have small staff of 50 employees, and my problem is with my directors, they have taken total control over each & every activity, I am not authorized to take any decisions, not even small issue like permission for half day leave to the employee, scheduling of any interview ,even I am not allowed to take a print out of official letters , every time I require to email them and request for the printout ,also for monthly stationery stock we need to take permission from them , if our admin person books any ticket for official purpose then also they interfere , many times they directly make calls to the travel agents and due to this everybody is frustrated with them. Presently they only employ me to resolve their bills related problems and with technical staff to manage hardware stock. Usually they use very harsh and loud tone while discussions, many times they have insulted technical staff, Company policies are also very inequitable, as per company policy if we need Tea / Coffee, then we have to manage by our own, now we are facing the same problem with the drinking water. Now I am feeling so much frustrated, many times I have discussed employees problems and other general issues with them , but every time I got the same answer “ No need to get in to all this, I/We have more important work to do and I/we don’t have time to answer your stupid interview questions.”
I am frustrated, what should I do?:?:
Please suggest.
Thanks,
S. Ratna

Dear Sunita Ratna,
It is clear that you are in some kind of cheap lala-type organization where there is no respect for HR and all. It is very shocking to know that for taking single printout you have to take permission and also there are no employee recreation facilities. Well, you have get a very hard HR experience.
Don’t get frustrated look for some good organization other then Lala type organization but don’t left your current job till then you get new one.
Best Wishes,

Sunita,
I have a couple of questions before I respond to your initial situation.
1) Are there any employee issues, such as high employee turnover, absenteeism etc.?
2) Are there any directors that support HR and promote good leadership practices?
3) Who does the directors report to?
4) What are the goals and challenges for the business?

Sunita, I think it is normal practice in Small companies, where HR is kept for following the instruction of Directors. The best thing will be look for good job and say them bye bye. Hi Ratna,
Firstly, appreciate your patience enduring the situtation and in writing in to take suggestions.
Here are my thoughts (adding to what my other friends on this forum have said):
1. Is there a job description that outlines your role in the company?
2. Have you asked questions to ascertain the role you need to play? Being the HR person can mean anything - I know of an organisation with a HR professional who played the role of a legal/admin consultant and did nothing related to HR. Find out
3. What is the attrition rate? What for are the other employees sticking on (in case they are)?
4. Do you know what triggered off this behaviour on the part of the directors?
Other questions directed to you:
1. What is the learning you can take away from this situation?
2. What does this situation say about you? Reflect on your communication style and what shift in your communication you can bring about to achieve your goals. Flexibility in communication is usually the key to unlock such situations. Experiment, Learn, Enjoy.
3. Finally, the world is a big place, opportunties are plenty. If you feel you have made all the attempts, look for an alternative.
And like Pankaj says, get hold of an alternative and then move out.
Wish you goodies.
Regards, Vin

Hi Sunita,
I totally agree with omprakash & chandan, Don't be stressed out & look out for change & say Adios & make your directors realise the importance of HR.
You will find these kind of cheap mentality Directors in some organization who is not aware about the in & out of integrity & ethics of the business.
Lady You need a change...!
Cheers & Good luck...!
