Dear Experts, One of my friends who is working as a secretary wants to change his role. He has more than 5.2 years of experience in the Admin/Secretarial/Personnel department. He possesses an MBA (General), but now he wants to change his role to gain identity and growth.
Can you please suggest any suitable role which suits him for further growth? also, please advise if any course could help him to make his new position better.

Dear friend,

If your friend is working as a secretary and wanted to change the line of his career then he should have been given this post. Why you are giving this post on his behalf? Is it that you have raised a post for yourself but to protect your identity, you have referred to yourself as a "friend"?

Anyway, your "friend" has a couple of options. He can move into HR or Admin or Logistics or Purchase department. You have not given his qualification correctly. What is MBA (General)? What is his basic qualification?

I conduct training programmes for secretaries. In this training, I handle one of the modules "career planning for secretaries". In this training, I help my participants in doing a SWOT Analysis of their careers.

While making a lateral move, tell your friend to do it in the same company. Change of career is always easy in the current company rather than changing the company itself.

All the best!

Dear kmdhassan,
Change of career is rare but not uncommon per se. Just two days ago, I conducted training programme on "Improving Purchasing Negotiation Skills" at Delhi. Sitting in front of me was one of the participants who was ex-HR. She did her MBA in Strategic HR from some university in UK. She told that jobs are not available that are suitable to her background and she did not wish to do other HR jobs. So she thought of entering in Supply Chain Management (SCM).
All the best to your friend.
