hi, While taking cognizance of personal problems of an employee may be a good HR initiative, it can not be taken too far. Showing indulgence in 'retrieving' him is thus a double edged sword. the use of which may imply compromise on work ethics. Bearing this in mind this problem should be tackled. Thumb rule should be: discuss this problem with the guy not in the workplace but at private rendeavouz and convey him the reason for talking at such place;make him register and admit the decline in his performance and give him time to regroup and start focusing on work;drop adequate hints of the consequences if he does not improve;after the lapse of the given period review at the workplace and give official warning if he is still 'in zone'. krishna m k sinha

I would never fire an employee because he/she is in love. Since the idea is to make him realize that work is just as important as love - If everything else fails - I would probably get him off some projects untill he is willing to do his job properly. I think you should speak to him in a very comforting manner and explain to him that he is being taken off the project temporarily because of his current distractions. Tell him that nothing is being held against him - this will make him realize the problem. Perhaps just take him off one project and put the idea in his mind.
It's not wise to loose your good employees over these very 'human' issues. Work around it and make him realize that he must concentrate on his work as well.

Dear Shyamli,
It is a very interesting question. You may tell him/ her that Loving someone is very nice thing. But due to this non performing to workplace it is not right. Some one likes you only because of your work, your attitude, behavior etc. Every one wants that his/ her partner must be well settled, having good attitude towards work, having sufficient money to enjoy the life.
If you will not perform well, than he/ she will also get upset. He/she loves you only bcoz of your good skills and your intelligence. So don't giveup that rappo.
After falling in love, if your performance will go up than after he/she will proud on you.
Always remember one thing that "TRUE LOVE NEVER BECOMES A BARRIER IN YOUR WORK/GOAL OF YOUR LIFE".
True lover is one who also love his work.
Shyamli, try to understand the situation and accordingly counsel to the employee. Giving warning to him is not a solution. you have to solve a problem by taking him in confidence. You may give him a example of true lover. You may also give him your some personal experience.
I hope that my suggestions will work.

Hi!
Thanks CHR, Ashutosh and Kanika for the great responses.
I also want to thank Sidhu1972. I seemed to have missed thanking him.
His suggestions were very interesting. But some words don't trigger an idea and some do. Rajendra also mentioned something that you mentioned its just that his phrasology triggered an idea which simply your words did not do.
But it does ot in any way undermine your efforts.
Thanks Again.

Dear shyamali,
Just tell him that whether he would like to be treated as a Vinod Kambali or Sachin tendulkar. Evry one knows that the reason for sinking of one career and pinnacle of anothers career.
Be easy but not loose.
Remember, he is valuable to your company but at the same time with whom he is doing is eqally precious for ur organisation .
Donot try to make any person references for further incident.
Do correct at first strock.
Rember if you are unable to control malpractices then you are part of this.

Halo,
So silly matter but nearing it is difficult to handle.
first thing to be done is to ask him what the problem he is facing.. give practical solutions.. if it is not working still give someday off for him to get over that...
or give threat to his life of loosing this job if he is unproductive.

Hi!
We were redesiging and restructuring the jobs in the organisation.
We rewarded him with more responsibilities beacuse he was a smart and an efficient employee.
We were supposed to offer him the same in Q4 but the same have been handed over a little earlier.
It was simple but effective. He has renewed his interest in work.
