Should Holidays and weekly off be included or excluded while calculating number of leaves when holidays falls in between leaves?
It is one of the questions which confuse many HR professional. Technically speaking, all leaves with pay are excluding weekly off and holidays which means even if an employee is on leave for whole month (30 days) which includes 4 weekly off and 1 holiday then employee should be considered on leave for 25 days only.
Similarly, if an employee take leave from Saturday to Monday where Sunday is weekly off then Sunday should not be counted as leave. Hence only 2 leaves should b counted.

Hello Bijay,

Your query surrounds one of the basic principles/practices followed in granting leave to employees. Pl.be informed -

1. All declared "intervening Holidays & Duty off days" sandwiched in-between 'Leave availed' are to be counted as 'Leave'.

2.However such of those days "prefixing & suffixing", either weekly off or declared holidays are treated as "Paid Holidays". There can be exceptions in a few establishments, notwithstanding, this is a generally followed practices.

There is no need for any confusion. Your queries discussed here are priodically raised. If you use the search option you'll be able to read all of them.

Coming back to your examples, i) On leave for 30 days=pl.apply rule (1) above.

ii) Leave from "Saturday to Monday" =if Sunday weekly off & if Saturday is a working day, all the 3 days to be counted as Leave for 3 days. Here consider both 1 & 2 above. This is due to the fact 'Sunday, a weekly off' is sandwiched between Saturday & Monday both being working days.

If you would need explanation with some more illustration, pl.continue..

Yes. Intervening weekly off should be counted as Leave. But even this also. Companies have different policies. For e.g. a reputed Auto major (MNC)headquartered in Chennai, have a leave policy wherein, if an employee avails PL for more than a week, then the intervening weekly-off (Sunday) shall also be counted for PL . But if a person falls on sick and avail sick leave (which spreads more than a week) then the Weekly-off (intervening) shall be counted as weekly-off only and not as leave.
Intervening National/Festival holidays should not be counted as leave.
