Hi all

I'm working as a HRD Assistant Manager doing the PDS CIPD through flexible learning here in Dubai, through ICS which is a UK based company and I've been in Dubai since Feb 2008. I will travel back to the UK twice per year for the 3 day workshops they provide. I have been back once and I am due to go back in March 09. I believe that examinations can be taken via the British Council in Dubai. However there is a company setting up here in 2010 that will also deliver the full PDS CIPD. I intend to transfer to this course after so that I can attend more classroom activity without leaving the UAE.

In the meantime I am working through self motivation whilst working very long days. I would be interested to meet people who are studying the same subjects for discussions, ideas and revision and real life examples for assignments etc. or even revising elements of the literature and regurgitating it back to others as a more 'fun' way to learn whilst practicing public speaking?

If there is anyone contemplating which course to take I would highly recommend the CIPD for its overall in depth study of all aspects of organisations from economics to social issues. It is also very well recognised internationally and having recently attended a conference where Vicky Wright (the CIPD President) came to speak it is now apparent that the CIPD is becoming more international in terms of its content which will make the post grad qualification even more credible.

Hope to speak to some of you soon

Nic!

Hi Nic,
At the moment I am contemplating which certification to go for. I have researched a lot on SHRM and CIPD. I have some free time at the moment until I get a job in Dubai so in order to utilize the time I thought of increasing my knowlesge base. Can you advise which out of the two is good SHRM cert of CIPD? And internationally recognised. Since I am looking for some qualification which can be use even outside UAE.
Thanks

Manmeet. Is there any certification for SHRM ??? I guess SHRM is a Society on Human Resource Management. Or did you mean SPHR ?
Good you said you have some time free. Just check out previous posts in this same section and more than once i have repeated the difference between SPHR and CIPD and what importance both has in International Qualification standards.
Cheers

Hi Sajid,
SHRM is indeed Society on Human Resource Management offering certification programs like SPHR, PHR and GPHR. I have gone through your previous posts on them. However my question is on value of certification from the perspective of learning offered and use in other parts of the world. At the moment one cannot decide whether they will be working for American or British company always and I believe that certification should solve all criterias.
So I wanted to know which out of the two is more of value if ur a global professional?
Thanks

Good afternoon Manmeet

I do not know much about your SPHR and PHR but I do know a lot about the CIPD and I know that it is certainly the qualificaiton that people are calling out for back in the UK, and is now internationally recognised, and I have seen it on job ads over here in Dubai. It is the same level as Chartered Accountant as it is the Chartered Institute for Personnel Development this is at Master degree level. My advice to you is serach through some job advertisements and see what qualifications they are looking for and I bet that CIPD comes up on some of the high profile jobs. However, it is your qualitication and it is what suits you the best so don't feel too much pressure here :icon6:

I have had a quick look at the websites for SPHR and PHR and it seems they are national quals not international but i may be wrong. To be a member of the CIPD means it has the extra edge of having to continually update you knowledge, you have to, to remain a member. Furthermore, the masters is just the beginning, you then progress further into different fields to be a true professional in your area, each stage (which is hard) that you go through (post CIPD certificate) opens more doors, it means that you can also add addtional letters to your name that can be easily distinguishable by fellow HR professionals at a glance when looking at CV's. Each letter represents years of experience, exams passed etc

Good luck in your decision and I hope I don't come across too pro CIPD! :icon10:

Dear Salim
I have been working as an HR head for the MEARC region for an IT company until recently. I have around 11 years of working experience in HR (In India & Dubai). Though my career has been in HR through out, my academic background is an MBA in General Management. Since I have quit my job due to personal reasons a couple of months ago, I would like to utilise this time to further my knowledge in certain specialised fields like Leadership management, coaching and mentoring etc...i.e, more on a senior HR level.
Is there any course you would suggest for this?
Thanks Parvathy

Hey Nic,
Thanks a lot for your reply. I have been studying through websites and trying to evaluate the reputation of both the organizations world over. Lets see..Once I am done with my research Il put it as a post for all members, so that they all can get the benefit and understand the difference the two organisations are offering.
Cheers
