Dear Madam,

To have a command of any language, you need to learn its grammar first. For English grammar, I would suggest "English Grammar by Wren & Martin," a book available in bookshops that will give you basic lessons in grammar. Next, as many have suggested, read an English newspaper. I suggest the Times of India, Mumbai edition. Lastly, speak only English as much as you know/can.

Best of luck.

Dear Veena,

English is an imported language. You can speak in a simple style. We need not use bombastic words. It must convey the meaning. Not only you, most of the persons are also like you. Please use a good dictionary like OXFORD.

BEST OF LUCK. One thing I have to appreciate is that you have agreed with your position.

Thank you.

Dear Veena,

To improve your communication, what you need is good listening skills. Listen to all videos, songs, movies, whatever you can in English. Watching movies will be helpful; it's from my experience. Another thing you can do is if you have a mirror in your home, go in front of the mirror, start talking about any topics that you are interested in.

I think this is enough. Within a short period, you will be a master. Good luck.

Sir,

Please follow the methods below, and you will find yourself comfortable during English conversations:

1. Make it a habit of reading at least one English newspaper.
2. Listen to English news or English cricket commentary (not in Hindi).
3. Look up new English words and try to use them during daily discussions.
4. If possible, teach or guide a few students in English. This is a good platform for beginners where you will feel more knowledgeable than them, boosting your confidence to speak English.
5. Lastly, keep speaking in English with friends. Don't worry about mistakes; instead, notice them and try to rectify them next time.

Hopefully, you will soon be able to speak English fluently.

Hi Veena,

Can I say one thing to you? Never bother about accent or vocabulary! They are the essence or spice of the language. Communication means making others understand "what you are saying."

There is an LSRW formula that you should prioritize in this way:

1. Listening
2. Speaking
3. Reading
4. Writing

In the initial stage, start by speaking in simple English with pauses. Pauses will give your brain time to process what you have to say in the next moment, reducing mistakes. Don't worry about active, passive, direct, or indirect sentences; just focus on simple sentences. This approach will help you gain confidence. After that, you can work on expanding your vocabulary and using phrases. Remember, British accent is different from American; even in British English, only 12% follow their own accent. The way we speak English in our country reflects our culture.

The final point is to ensure people understand you. That's all. Best of luck!

Madhavi

Dear Friends,

This is the common issue we are facing today in the MNC culture. English proficiency is a prime requirement, and many people are not comfortable with it.

These valuable suggestions will be very helpful in improving their speaking skills.

Thanks to all of you.

I would like to suggest some practical things which you can follow immediately without much effort:

1. Use Google Chrome extension dictionary feature.
2. Download or purchase Cambridge dictionary software; it has a thesaurus and pronounceable feature that will help you a lot.
3. Watch at least 30 minutes of any cartoon channel (English version); it will give you refreshment and knowledge of English usages. You can have fun with your children, if you have any; they will enjoy it too.
4. Command over perfect tense first; it will give you more confidence.
5. Last but not least, don't lose heart. You know, one of my teachers told me that English language is not a big deal, just follow continuously, and it will take around 10 months. So be calm and keep trying. Very soon, you will feel that you are changing. Believe me and cheer!

"Hello Dear, I have experience as an admin cum assistant in an IT company. Now, I have left my company. However, I am not able to qualify in interviews due to my poor communication skills. When I speak English, my pronunciation is not clear, and I make grammar mistakes, leading to confusion. Please help me improve myself. - Veena"

Dear,

It's good that you are willing to improve at least now. It is not true that everybody is good at everything; almost all of us have our weaknesses. English speaking is difficult not only for you but for many. I suggest the following simple methods:

1. First of all, with the help of some of your good friends, you have to identify what is wrong in your English speaking. For example, grammatical mistakes and inappropriate usage of words, i.e., using wrong words in the wrong place. Try to correct them all.

2. Think in English and speak in English.

3. Always try to speak in English, whether at home or outside.

4. Reading English newspapers regularly will help you understand how to build sentences and where to use them.

5. Most English movies don't help improve English speaking in the short run, as many conversations are not clearly understood (except when subtitles are displayed on the screen). So, you won't benefit much. Instead, if you watch English news on TV, you will gain better pronunciation.

Reading a page loudly for half an hour a day will improve your English. Try to use simple words and sentences. Listen to good speakers. Don't be conscious of your mistakes. Determine to speak in English only, come what may; no sky will fall on you.
