Hello Dear,

I have experience as an admin cum assistant in an IT company. I have now left my company. However, I am facing challenges in qualifying for interviews due to my poor communication skills. When I speak English, my pronunciation is unclear, and I often make grammar mistakes, leading to confusion.

Please help me improve myself.

Dear Ms. Veena,

The only way to improve yourself is by reading a lot of articles in newspapers and books. By doing this, you may understand how to converse. Mostly, try to speak in whatever way (layman language) even if there might be any grammatical errors. Watch business channels and try using a dictionary in case of difficulty.

By following this approach, you will improve your communication skills in a better way. Be confident, never lose hope.

Cheers...

Hi Veena,

Here are a few simple ways you can try:

1) Listen More - Watch English news and programs regularly. Listen carefully to the pronunciation and try using the same when you make conversation.

2) Read More - Reading novels and newspapers introduce you to a new world of words. Hence, you can update your vocabulary too.

Be confident when you speak. Good luck!

Hi Veena,

I respect the way in which you have accepted that you want to improve your communication skills. (English is only a language to express.)

The above-said thing will definitely help you in gaining knowledge about English, but not the required experience, and that too in an unskilled manner because in your case while reading, you will continue reading with the wrong pronunciation.

Before suggesting you the ways, may I know what you have done in the past to improve your communication skills (Here I am referring to English) and what problems you face while speaking? Is it the clarity of thoughts, or is it the lack of knowledge about the words or sentence construction? From the way you have written your problem, I will suggest "BACK TO THE BASICS."

Hi Veena,

It's a common problem for many people because English is not our national language. However, if you want to succeed in the corporate industry, your communication skills should be very good. I am just giving some tips to help you improve your English:

1. Read an English newspaper in front of a mirror.
2. Try to make a friend with whom you can speak only in English.
3. Watch English movies.
4. Buy a book or download a tongue twister from the internet; it will help you a lot.
5. Don't hesitate to speak English, regardless of whether you are using the right words or not. Just remember that your sentence should flow continuously until it is complete.

Good Luck!

Child,

In addition, if you can be on video, you may be able to get better communication soon. I also caution you that it is not a quick fix solution or magic; it will need sincere deliberate efforts for a minimum of 16 to 20 weeks.

Dear Veena,

I do not know your background; however, since you have worked as an admin assistant, you are able to cope with routine work. One thing is clear: in HR/Admin roles, there is a lot of communication to be done in the office. You will need to talk to different sets of people, so your communication must be effective. Not everyone is born a genius. It is necessary for you to try to improve your communication skills. Improvement is achievable and will happen automatically.

Follow this method:

1. Talk to people in your family in English only.
2. Read English newspapers daily.
3. Read the editorials in English newspapers daily, especially from The Hindu.
4. Daily, use a dictionary to find the meanings of at least 10 to 15 words.
5. Never attempt to converse with executives in your regional language.
6. Read a lot of novels and historical books from the library.

If you follow the above steps, I am confident that you will gain confidence within a period of three months, and you can continue to improve.

Kind regards,

Sir,

Please take a good English-Hindi-English dictionary and read it for at least half an hour daily. Try to speak English always and write these words four to five times a day. This way, your vocabulary and pronunciation will improve.
