Hi Alankrita,
Knowledge of law would definitely help.
As you come across lot of situations related to law in your day to day routine where you need to be responsible as an hr to explain to the employees and the management.
For example:
Calculation of overtime for your employees, drafting any policy and letters, while taking action for any disciplinary issues etc. The complexity of understanding of the subject and its usage increases as you rise up the ladder in HR.
i would say just a degree is not enough, knowledge and application in day to day hr activities are also important.
You can pursue Diploma in labor law and labor welfare (one year course) to build up your understanding.

If your current position and responsibility relates only to discharging the HR function and there is a separate position in your organization handling IR issues independently, then acquiring a law degree should not be much of a priority for you. Acquiring legal knowledge can be need based and through seeking advice from qualified professionals. Over a period of time we all acquire working knowledge of the legal aspects.

However, as it invariably happens in many organizations, the HR functionary is invariably called upon or is expected to discharge the IR function also. If that be the case, or if you foresee the possibility of handling IR issues also in your organization in furture, then a law degree would certainly add great value to your efforts. For instance, a trade union is entitled under law to object to the presence of a practicing advocate representing the employer before the conciliation machinery of the Labour Department or before a Labour Court or Tribunal. In such a scenario, a legally qualified in-house representative of the employer should be in a much better position to pursue the case before these forums and dealing with its technicalities, when compared to a non-legal professional.

It seems you are from Mumbai.
In Mumbai there is a course of three months duration (Fast Track Industry Oriented) conducted by Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Institute of Management and Legal Research, Wadala.
This course offers DLL (Hons) to senior and junior management executives / supervisors from different functional areas in HRM and to Labour Law Consultants and their staff.
This diploma is designed value based and practice orientated with practical training by expert academicians and management / labour law consultants.
I am one of the faculties among others for this course. Brochure of the course is attached herewith.

it depends on the industry to industry where you work on.Mainly if u have good knowledge on the degree is not compulsory it depends on the practical exposure in the industry how you perform in the industry and how you will interact with others according to the concept
