Hi Abdul,

It was good joke and good post too.. Infact a great learning too. Lets please not be rude by saying that it was not a good post. Its a HR community forum and its fine to give critical feedbacks but please not personalised ones. You not liking it is a personal opinion and me liking it is again a personal opinion but my action has not caused any damage and in fact has motivated him share more with all of us. After all, a HR personnel must motivate people isn't it?

Navinder, has been expressing humility and thats the sign of a great HR person. I appreciate the way he had responded to your feedback.

Now coming to your objection, let me tell you that one of the most powerful methods to convince a human being is called FEEL, FELT and FOUND method. This has been a open secret behind Eureka forbes door to door selling's phenomenal success.

There are so many ways to bring in change among people and this story is just telling us one of those ways and like I had mentioned, earlier, Stick will also work sometimes.

Hope, I have not hurt you by taking the liberty to let you know what I felt.

I appreciate all your response, and I appologise if my posting hurt you... But there is a need to clarify my stands...
As Muthukumar said, its all about your perspective...How you are looking at the theme. But one thing I want to convey here... Motivating people is different from Forcing one to work.
As Navinder said, From the story, if nothing work then make him/her feel the fear. So they will get align to the line.
One thing we are missing here...

When you make some one feel the fear, there is no mutual... Do something to make the parrot "MUTUAL". That may be a good ending of this story.
for example... Finally the parrot asked David "By the way where do you purchase the ICE CREAMS ?". It may signal you Motivating a Buddie.
Again as Muthukumar said, Its about your personal opinion.

You have a point,Abdul. But here too, the attitude of the parrot(employee) is important. Had the parrot demonstrated positive attitude earlier, this state would not have arisen. Also, the dead chicken was not intentionally place there in the fridge. It was out of realisation (fear) that the parrot willingly changed.

Likewise, there ARE some employees (a very small percentage maybe) who are always on their own 'trip' and tend to reform only when given some 'jhatka', as they start fearing that they could probably lose their jobs etc..

But yes, your point taken - this should not become an accepted behaviour by the boss in normal cases. Here is where 'Employee Engagement' comes into play. And perhaps, David did not engage the parrot well enough to find out what wa bothering him?

The best of employees at times cme with Baggage, and it is the leadership and motivation provided by a Boss which will enable him/her to empty that baggage. But if everything else fails, well, the fridge is still there.

To apologise in open forum calls for a great courage and you are absolutely strong.
Again in support of the story, I strongly feel the fear factor is also one of the ways to convince a person.
Infact, a parrot in a real sense could not have understood the reality and it was meant for the humans. Please read the following as a literature and this is sanskrit.
According to the vedas, there are four popular ways to bend an enemy Sama (soft means), Dhana(donating the needy thing), Bedha (creating differences) and Danda (using force). I am sure almost all of us must have learnt this in our childhood.
The elders say that, the sequence must be followed to achieve the desired result. The story here explains one of those ways.
Once again, I appereciate your courage.

Hey,
Nice story. But thats the essence of life...You may not change unless and untill you see the repercussions of the act done by you.
I met a guy, who always used to drive rashly, be it if he is in hurry...or otherwise...he would just drive the same way. One day, when he saw a person driving similar way as him, meeting with an accident and losing his legs to the accident...it changed him.
You need lessons to change.... ADVICE is yet another lesson...but it seldom works...
There is this saying about HABIT....let me share it with you...
Spell Habit...its H A B I T...
Take H from the word, A BIT remains, Take H & A from the word, BIT remains, Take H,A& B from the word, IT remains....its difficult to remove a habit...only you can change it....
