You have raised a very practical and real question and it needs lots of debates and i am surprised that there are few responses. The role of HR Professional is very mixed, it has vivid facet, and sometime it looks very simple and sometime very complicated.

In account you deal with figures, on shop floor u deal with machines but in HR u deal with human beings who have feelings, emotions, sentiments and its a human tendency that bad things if happens last long and leave a scar on their mind, heart and behavior, good things happens leave behind positive and good feeling and loyalty. If machine breaks down it can affect production for a while but if human heart breaks down needs years to overcome.

So if someone is highly qualified in the field of HR but lacks some traits cant be successful HR professional, and the one who is very good in various things which can help in working in the field of HR but not having specialized knowledge of HR will get stuck somewhere in the course of time.

What i want to say that only specialization or higher studies in HR never make a successful all-rounder HR Professional, although specialized education should be must to come in HR field but the special vision to see beyond certain point, understanding of human behavior and traits and that kind of heart is also an essential quality to do justice with ur job.

Specialized Education in HR + Capacity to convert and implement theory in to practice + Good Human Heart which have capacity to understand and feel human emotions and sentiments + Experience while working with people which keeps on accumulating as year passes on = Successful HR professional.

People who want to come to HR from other fields are welcome but if they want to do justice with themselves and want to be success in HR they should undergo specialized training and studies in HR first.

Hi Ranjana,
Ranjana this situation is everywhere at some places more and at some places less but it is there. :D
I always say to my friends that in an organisation except the so called HR Manager, rest all are real HR managers. You will find them discussing policies, PF etc etc with such a confidence that at one time u will feel blank. They will eat ur head.
The best thing is just enjoy them doing that beceause from peon to seniors all think and live in the illusion that HR person is a fool and if they were in HR they must have done this and that.
To interfere in HR is very easy beceasue in an organization except the real HR Manager rest all or most of them are keen to be HR manager.

Hi,
Its really a nice discussion. As far as my knowledge is concern the Qualification matters a lot & also it varies from Industry to industry. Coming to PSU or any other Govt organization qualification matters a lot.So it can be MBA(HR)/PMIR/MSW. Any graduate can do this post graduate program.Coming to IT sector HR functions are further divided into HR generalist role (Core HR),recruitment,PA specialist,Payroll Analyst,etc. For Recruitment they are preferring a graduate even having sound knowledge in Technical side,here holding a master degree doesn't matter,skill is imp.Payroll analyst even generally people from finance background handling..
so inshort I feel now the scenario is to be jack of all trades & if master of 1 then added point. but a cant be only master of one.

I have seen company wants to invest in HR minimum.Thats why they take anybody from tecnical side so they can use that person from all side .
whenever the matter comes to salaries for HR company wants to pay minimum. :cry: its sad .litrelly have to fight for increments for the dept.
They pay anything to operations but HR who is really working hard to stream line the system is never paid well
Only one reason i ustood is company don't ustand the value of HR Dept.

Hi Members,
I have gone through all of the replies but my view is little bit differ which may be summarised as follows:
First it is neccessary to know the job profile of HR and if the profile is clear then it will be easy to say is specific quafication is required for it or not.
Any one can do any thing this right and engineer, doctor, etc can be a HR person but he/she should have a knowledge of the HR professanals.
Say Training part for this training required i.e a qualification
if legal part then legal qualification
if IR then IR qualification
It is also true that in earlier days without any qualification people had done a great things.
And at present also you might be knowing the Mumbai Dabawala (The lunch tiffin supplier) how nice they have managed not only this now the student of MBA from India and Abroad are taking training from them.

Your thoughts are good, convincing.
Now im seeing ads for Recruiters, 12 pass also are eligible now.
There is no respect for the Highly qualified HR,, companies recruit some low qualified but high skilled / communication / convincing skill person.
And people with high knowledge are not getting proper recognition
Even i sometimes think why i came to HR

Please, do not be desperate!

Success is not based on one element only. If an HR Man is extremely skillful and very low in technical knowledge, would you think that person would survive in a competitive environment?

As you know, some times an HR person has to show more technical knowledge of HR, to be more effective in situations. Why people are thinking that any Dick and Harry can come into HR and do what ever is purely due to ignorance of Hard Core HR Functions. In olden days, Personnel Dept clubbed with Administration was only dealing with transfers, ESI, PF, Bonus, etc. Even now many people think that HR means all these!

In good organisations where full fledged HR is in place, almost every employee is aware about the importance of HR dept functions and how it benefits their career and personal life.

Why HR lost its significance in some organisations is only because they cannot afford a highly successful HR Man. So they settle down with a graduate or an undergraduate of any stream to do mere PF work or leave management or some clerical works and as I replied earlier, there is no statutory requirement for a qualified HR professional in organisations like a Finance Manager, whose qualification is prescribed by law.

But fortunately, reputed organisations especially working in technology based industries have made way for modern HR Management with state-of-the-art functions including international certifications which are purely knowledge based. These are truly demanding high technical knowledge in HR where an ordinary HR person will not be successful.

Let your worries be bygones, and be cheerful. You, along with all other highly knowledgeable HR professionals will be in high demand soon.

but tough to answer
First of all, HR is unlike any other streams of management. the only stream which can to some extend match is marketing. ]
in HR knowledge or background in the subject would help you a lot but not make you successful.
there are 100s of HR managers who do not have any sort of hr educational background and still highly successful
and there are 10000s of hr guys with qualifications but make themselves a worst manager
The main problem in HR is that the rawmaterial (if we can call so ) People behave in a number of permutations combinations in different environment... and they are totally unpredictable in most situations also.
therefore one of the factors that determine the success of an HR guy is more of his personal skill in predicting this behavioural mode

Its really nice to discuss such an issue and share the problems faced practically so as to come across some solution.

Like other technical areas e.g. eng, medical..etc I believe that HR is also a technical area but the problem is "Realization". A number of points have been discussed that why it is technical i.e. bcz of the understanding and dealing with the psychology of employees, designing system (Policies, Procedures), managing training & development, performance mgt, compensation & benefits and other so many issues.

Question is "Can other technical persons design a need based Performance Management System without learning / training of the same? (As after getting training or learning engineering aspects we can also become technical skills holder which means nothing could be practiced properly without learning/ training. But from where you will develop that particular mindset, required to carry out all these tasks.

This only comes by remaining in that area from your start or somewhat later but then for years. So HR's importance is less today but I believe that after realization it will definitely increase a lot.

HR is not every one's cup of tea.
There is certain knowledge you can acquire from the courses held for HR but the remaining is on your own. It depends on how good you are at handling the people and their problems.
All those who can love people being empathetic can become an HR master.
No need for any special degrees but the skills are essential.
Knowledge over the Different aspects and behavioral factors of HR along with the legal awareness will extra points in this.
