Hi All,
even we have some accross such problems especially in our office premises in North Karnataka.
we have placed spit toons in all the places where the activity is high.
secondly we have displayed a notice saying that if anybody is caught spitting then a fine of Rs.100/- will be levied and deducted directly from the salary which in turn will go into the LWF.
else the entire cleaning charges will be leveid on that particular person.
thirdly if there are customers walking in regularly into the premises then they should be monitored for the same by the security guards

instead of asking them not to do something use an opposite approach by asking them to do it.u can put up some postures which have the below mentioned things written on them
"ur workplace is like god's temple. but if u wish please spit over here"
"ur workplace is like a second home, but u can throw garbage over here if u do the same at ur home"
and u can come up with many more innovative ideas but remember the approach shud be asking them to do wat they r not supposed to do
in order to have a culture change in the organization, u wont be able to achieve anything with force.
u have to hit at the right spot by evoking the moral character of peole.

Hi Sonali,
That's a real good approach, but its not always cake walk.
In actual situations its never the same. i have tried some thing like that in my previous organisation. it dint work.
Moreover it depends on the kind of work force you are dealing with, Indicipline should sometimes be dealt with diciplinary actions.
The code of conduct comes handy in such times.

I agree with deepak,
Type of people we are targeting is very important,
The people think this is the birth right since they are ( some) are belongs to tribal and in the tribal area, all the family members together enjoy such habits.
We have fixed various gods photos for the all corners of the pillar in the shop floor, but they are not using that pillar. Now they use near by the walls, or flower pots. Self discipline is also important in this.

I think fine of Rs. 50 is very less. As we can see on delhi fine for helmet, red light crossing and driving licence is changed from 100 to 600 ( 100 + 500) , and punch the licence and after 5 punch licence is expired. After this rule the Cases of persons without helmet and crossing the redlight is very less. So like that we have to increase the fine from 50 to 500 mean (400 + 100). I think 400 from fine is for company and 100 is for person that inform. and if person that informed does not want 100 tha's name should be hidden. i think if this applied on one person at least 9 will be avoid spitting.

Hi Deepak,
i agree with you. actually im still studying and have no experience with the actual situation and the things which actually work
since u had implemented such a thing before and it didnt work, u must be more experienced in dealing with such situations at work and knowing what really works !!!!!

Dear friends,
Like Deepak, i have also handled the same situation in both soft & hard ways. but only the harder side worked oout. They are afraid that they will be penalised and stopped spitting. They have even stopped chewing bubble gums in the shop floor.

We seem to be dominated by theory x managers... i still would like to believe that there are theory Y people in shop floors... may be because im still just starting my career... lemme think loud about the =positives and -ives of both approaches

punishment and fines (legitimate, coercive sources of power)

1.very high chances of recurrence

2. how long will you punish (as you yourself pointed out)

theory Y approach proposed...a campaign for culture change

activities: education.. use posters educating why not to dirty premises.. the concept of treating a wok place as a place of worship... poignant questions like, if this were your house would you do it? <on a poster showing some one spitting on a wall> or may be a short movie showing one person advicing another why not to spit on the wall... try and instill a sense of pride for the work space, and a sense of belonging <assuming you have permenant and not temporary workers>... may be create a work force <to physically do> or a task force <to intellectually plan out> methods to combat this evil... hopefully this should work... i have free time now and am interested in this proj.. if your want any specific help designing posters etc, drop me a mail at .. im not too good at hindi the posters shad be designed in vernacular font... i still believe people can be mended :)
