Are there other ways of checking a job applicant's background apart from the traditional reference checks?

Other alternative for Reference/baclgrpimd checks are:
1. There are many security agency who will carry out background checks for certain fees.
2. State Police department also will carry out and issue PVC ( Police verificatiion Certificate)
