Lavika, Your fight with your innerself is something that majority would undergo in their career at some point in time. This is common. But, there is no real problem here.
These days the buzz word in HR is 'Change'; Change the HR job for other functional jobs. This kind of shift will add more business knowledge and a bit of technical skills in HR professional and he/she will develop into relating more to the business. People on selection panel are looking for variety in the CVs. Besides 'Change', people also look for ' Adaptability' also. I agree with Dinesh Divekar. Adding skills in different areas is worth paying in the long run.
But, having said the above, We should also be mindful about the recruitment style of Big companies if we are aiming to make a foray into the Big Companies. Some of these companies, very specifically check if the candidate has worked for any reputed company. This is because, they feel the candidate would have the requisite grooming and the expertise they would need. But note that not all the companies would have this thought.
So, I would suggest that you can continue doing whatever job comes to you. If the job does not fall in your domain expertise then reach out to people. Take their help and keep learning. And parallely, keep applying for jobs with reputed companies. You have an advantage because you are firm in your mind that salary would not be a constraint for you for a right company.And. if you also make yourself flexible to work in any location then you will more chance of getting choosen. So go-ahead. You are right in your thought. Wish you Good Luck! .

As far as HR job is concerned, function of HR remain the same, irrespective of the team size. In a large sized company you may have to do
some 10000-20000 appraisals annually, but in a small sized company you need to manage only 40-50 appraisals. In both these cases,
performance appraisal work will be the same. but in large company, the quantum of work will be more.
And it is always better to "become a big shot in a small office than a small fly in a big office"!
Thanks
