hello friends,
I am new to this forum and would like to have the suggestions from site members.
I am an engineer from R.E.C.(N.I.T)and and have two years work exp. with swedish multinational in marketing. currently pursuing MBA from a well known management inst. I have an interest in taking HR as a specialization but i am very much apprehensive of career scope of an engineer in HR field. Kindly tell me about the scope and options available for an engineer with marketing experience in this field.

this is completely my point of view vish
i think ppl choose HR only out of passion for the subject. its ofcourse like any other area of specialisation - if you are good in what you do go ahead, dont have second thoughts.
im a Electronics and Communication Engineer now a HR, throughout my MBA my friends, profs, interviewers kept asking me "So tell me why HR after an Engineering?" if you truely have a answer that will satisfy you first and subsequently others then i dont see any problem.
do it because you want to do it not because you have to do it.
ask yourself first.

hi
the concept of engineer and his responsibility is changing very fast, in the world of outsourcing and technological advancement it is obvious that mere an engineering graduation takes u to the status of not above tecnician
You need to play a very important role of HR management in the field,it is very nice thinking to take up HR as an additional knowledge asset
I was an engineer but the situation demands me to play more hr issue resolvement than machine making , today in kuwait i am holding a good position just b'coz one of the strength(SWOT analysis) is HR tackling
so go ahead with your decision

hello Ranjani
You are better qualified in two aspects of the HR field, being a chennaite your role is more prospective in corporate sectors, being into any industry and encountering various conflicts fetch you immense of knowledge about IR, it is therefore as per my advise the better option is choosing corporate sector now
all the best

hi vish,
just giv few perspectives on how u could think on this issue.
first, organizations like ppl with multi disciplinary qulfcations and backgrounds.
second, though ur an engineer u have deal with business managmenet in an organization.
third, plz select ur area of liking, u should know ur strengths and weakness. r u passionate? if so u could deal with ppl. if not what. r u good in numbers? then sales or finance. r u craetive can u appeal to ppl then its marketing. like wise understand ur strength.
fourth, even in sri lanka many engineers are into mbas since they have understand the business sense.mba makes u move up the laddr.
fifth, do not worry about the majors and minors, ask ur self wht do u want to become?
sixth, be the person u wanted to become.
best of luck

Dear Colleagues,

A degree in Engineering plus an MBA with a bias for HR is just magnetic.

First and foremost no matter how sophisticated a machine/equipment is it would always be manipulated by a man and eventually serviced by him too.

Closely linked to the above is the fact that on a daily basis the engineer relates with people within and outside the organization hence people skills aquired under HR becomes useful especsially in the area of grievance handling and arbitration at the workplace.

Moreover the workplace is gradually and surely moving towards the Line Manager reporting channel-hence for instance the Line Manager of a Production Department with such combination of experience would handle his people well and understand them better.

And in addition such career person would easily rise to the position of a Managing Director in an Engineering/Production firm because of his ability to manage both material and people well.

No matter what career path we have chosen good people would always remain the capital to be managed with tact and wits.

Thanks.
