I agree to you as being an HR I firmly believe that 9 am-6 pm is very long time to work in office & if organized well one need not to stay beyond that.It is true that at times we need to be more flexible but that too not very often.Working in ofiice hours efficiently shows the productivity of an employee.

For Hr professional there is no fixed time bound in which you have to complete. It depends on the situation were you have to stay for long hours and some time your work will get finished earlier, every thing will be based on the current situation in the organization.

As being a Manager of an company , I believe that , Yes, HR people should work 9 to 6, the reason is that the HR functions are not only related with the salary of employees or the taking care of the attendance but they have to evaluate the performance of each employees of the organization and also taking care of their work being handled properly or not. Infact, HR is the Backbone of the organization, they have to be there with them all the time.
So at the end it is believed that HR should be there 9 to 6...

i dont think there is an hard an fast rule as to what time HR has to work. It could be flexible as per the requirements of the job after all u wont be training during the day in case u work as a trainer in a call centre where employees are there at night. Plus the demarcations of each job affect the kind of work and time or schedule required for it. So i dont think there has to be a stipulated time when HR has to work.

I dont think you can generalize the fact that HR professionals work/can work only from 9 to 6. It depends in which company, industry and how fast the respective business is growing!
I believe you would be in a position to make that comment only if HR is merely considered a support function rather than a Corporate Service (when you reach a strategic level)
If you really want to take things to the next level, you would never find enough hours in the day to really do HR work!

I agree with the style of working 9-6, as i believe that if you really utilize the given 8 hrs to the max with out any interruption except an hour for lunch then definitely we can wind up to home or other social events after 6. But in some peak days there is no excuse.

And why are they sitting late? Working hard? No way!!!
Any guesses???
Let's ask one of them...
Here's what he says... "What's there 2 do after going home...Here we get
to surf, AC, phone, food, coffee that is why I am working
late...Importantly no bossssssss!!!!!!!!!!!"
This is the scene in most research centers and software companies and
other off-shore offices.
Bachelors "Time-passing" during late hours in the office just bcoz they
say they've nothing else to do...
Now what r the consequences...
"Working" (for the record only) late hours soon becomes part of the
institute or company culture.
With bosses more than eager to provide support to those "working" late in
the form of taxi vouchers, food vouchers and of course good feedback, (oh,
he's a hard worker... goes home only to change..!!).
They aren't helping things too....
To hell with bosses who don't understand the difference between "sitting"
late and "working" late!!!
Very soon, the boss start expecting all employees to put in extra working
hours.
So, My dear Bachelors let me tell you, life changes when u get married and
start having a family... office is no longer a priority, family is... and
That's when the problem starts... b'coz u start having commitments at home
too..
For your boss, the earlier "hardworking" guy suddenly seems to become a
"early leaver" even if u leave an hour after regular time... after doing
the same amount of work.
People leaving on time after doing their tasks for the day are labelled as
work-shirkers...
Girls who thankfully always (its changing nowadays... though) leave on
time are labelled as "not up to it". All the while, the bachelors pat
their own backs and carry on "working" not realizing that they r spoiling
the work culture at their own place and never realize that they would have
to regret at one point of time.
So what's the moral of the story??
* Very clear, LEAVE ON TIME!!!

HR is a 24*7 Job...you have to live it to excel it....(This is purely my view-point)
