I read somewhere that certification is just an add on to your CV and not much beneficial in long term. Is that so?

No, it is not at all so! Professional certifications are expected to see a further spurt in numbers, spurred on by industry demand. 94% of HR personnel will make some form of professional certification mandatory for new talent in specialized areas such as digital marketing, software development and analytics soon. Dear Megha,
It is not a question of acquiring a certification alone. A course certificate will become just a piece of paper if the knowledge gained from the course is not implemented. Why just single out certifications? What about graduation or post-graduation degrees or professional courses like MBA?
Many members of this forum, who are also MBAs raise very basic queries. They raise these queries because they lose touch with their text books. Indians are in hurry to dispose off the old books as scrap (raddi) rather than retaining these for the future use.
Leadership lies in execution of the knowledge and not in accumulation of it. If you are able to convince interviewers about particular competency then I do not think that he/she will raise any objections.

To a great extent you are right. Companies and recruiters look at the basic qualification and consider certifications as just additional iceing to the cake at best, or an meaningless gesture at worse.
However, the answer depends on the industry. For example, if you are into computer networking, a CISCO certification is worth more than a degree from IITs. So its not that you can make a blanket statement that is valid in all circumstances

From India, Amritsar
Dear Dimple,
You could have given little more information about yourself like your qualification, the nature of your industry, type of job that you do in HR, your age etc. It is not a question of certification alone as stated in the my above post, you should get opportunity to implement the knowledge that you gained from the certification course.
By the way, what is that you have done to implement the HR knowledge in your current job? Have you used current job for experimenting something in HR?
Thanks,
Dinesh Divekar
