Hi

Normally, students while studying in the colleges have wild dreams, as if each one is going to be leading an organisation in a hard core engineering area for operation from day one.

Even if you happen to start your work on a shop floor, you cant expect to remain there for ever. Over a period of time, you will be asked to manage a team of people and later on it is just going to manage a business unit, managing people, managing projects...and so on. If you want to become an all-round professional, be patient, learn everything that is required and not required and gradually grow in the organisation. There is no need or cause for confusion at this very young age. Whatever task is assigned to you just learn. Keep an open mind and keep your cup empty.. If you are already having a closed mind, you will never grow in stature. Nobody can become an expert overnight. Everything takes time. You will be posted in different departments of the organisation - be it manufacturing or service or marketing or sales.. whatever it is. The basic objective of the management is to give you an opportunity or exposure to different aspects of business and at one point of time, you may be posted in one particular department of your choice or where the management feels that your knowledge and skills suitable for a particular kind of operation.

So dont try to be in a hurry to learn everything one day or feel restless on the first day itself if you are asked to work in a department. Dont be reluctant to learn new things in life. You have a long way to go and you dont know where your path is going to take you to....

Upgrade your knowledge and keep on learning... it is a process from cradle to grave. Never stop it.

Best wishes.

Dear Santosh,

There are various departments in an organisation...Production, Sales and Marketing, Finance, Technology, HR, Operations et all. The structure of the departments in an organisation depend on the business it is in.

As you said you are a Mechanical Engineer. And so, you would be more in line with the Technology department which would be looking at R&D, Engineering & IT.

In a manufacturing firm, Engineering & IT are maintenance and support necessary for production, planning while New product R&D activities are executed in the form of a project. In a service organisation, each development or maintenance activity is usually undertaken as a project.

A project is defined as a temporary endeavour to create a unique product, service or a desired result under the constraints of scope, time, cost. The resources to perform the activities are provided by various other departments.

The expertise of each department is different and only a business adminstration course or a long stint of employment working across departments provides you right kind of exposure for a broader view. Working in a project provides you with the best exposure with cross functional interactions and oppurtunities to learn. Hence, i believe it is a best fit for you as a Project engineer.

An employee's growth prospects in terms of postion and salary are dependant on not only organisation, its structure but also what are his aspirations and how well he executes his growth plans to clinch the best oppurturtunities with the people he would be working with.

So good luck.

Hope this helps.

Hello Santosh,
Your stage of confusion is similar to mine, but I came to know that we will be best developed if we explore each and every dept. of the organisation. Prior to the entry of mine into the Change Management team I thought "My Career is in RISK" but after getting into it I found something new in me, I started brushing up my skills for that role, So i request you to "Consider It as an Opportunity rather than A Chance". surf in the dept for a span. If you still feel its not suitable for you, You just remember that "This life is yours completely yours" and make your favorable choice.
