Dear Vijay,
I am glad to know that you are taking a keen interest in Employee Engagement. In addition to what Mr. Mahavir has mentioned, employee engagement is a continuous process to build engagement. This needs to be treated as a strategic initiative for sustainable growth by the senior leadership. Without proper buy in from the management at the start, the engagement program will only end up as a good to have "health check" survey.
A company's policies, processes, PMS, reward and recognition programs must be aligned to engagement improvement. Companies that have highly engaged employees outperform their peers in profit growth, revenue, and EPS.
Let me know if you have more questions on this topic.

Employee engagement is viewed by many as an event mangement activity or fun and frolic to drive monotony. Therefore the person who is incharge of engaging employees shall have fair understanding of the objects and goals which are intended to be achieved by employee engagement activities so that he can take his job seriously. Handling disengaged employee is an imporatnt and significant responsibility because a disenaged employee may lead to attrition, under production and may spread frustration among other employees or disturb interpersonal relations and consequently team spirit and overall performance of the team.

The object of an employee engagement policy shall be to enage an employee's head, heart and soul so that he not merely performs the task asigned to him but contributes to the goals of the company activeley. The objective of employee engagement in my view, among others will be :

1) To kep the employees motivated not merely to do thier assined job but contribute to the goals of the company.

2) To make the employees committed to stay.

3) To make them highly productive.

4) To develop positive state of mind in them.

5) To make them feel part of the organisation.

6) To make the employees relate to one other.

7) To make them enjoy their work

So that all these positivities will have synergetic effect on the environment in the company that is conducive to achieve goals.

Vadivijay,
Engagement is a very important issue. Please look at this video or read the transcript.
Leadership Skills: How to Create Engaged Employees
There are specific reasons why that approach works and others don't. They are based on the science of people and how they react to managerial actions and inactions. On the surface, all people appear very different. But underneath the surface, at a deeper level, people are all the same as concerns managing them. The goal of managing people is to unleash their full potential and at fully potential they are all highly motivated, highly committed, and fully engaged, at least 300% more productive than if poorly engaged.

Leadership is a science and so is engagement

Employee engagement is based on trust, integrity, two way commitment and communication between an organisation and its members. It is an approach that increases the chances of business success, contributing to organisational and individual performance, productivity and well-being. It can be measured. It varies from poor to great. It can be nurtured and dramatically increased; it can lost and thrown away.
