A treatment would depend on the culture of a company. However, its the human values, which remains effortlessly the same. A senior employee is a talent who have worked through roles and levels. Their business knowledge and professional maturity is an asset to the firm
While dealing with them these are the top two areas to be kept in mind. Bureaucracy and power plays are close to human nature , yet prone to situation. Not every firm is affected with it to the same degree.
Weigh how the interviewers view their mentors in the firm and put your answers in that light.

To add further, going by your query, it does seem that you are a senior HR professional yourself--else such a query wouldn't be put to you [lower level HR professionals' focus is quite something else].

Having said this, I do hope you did some amount of research about the company thru Internet BEFORE going for the interview--which would give you the general nature/domain of the company. Each domain/industry has it's own set of situations/cultures to be handled--which (Cite Contribution) mentioned.

One rather-common aspect of senior employees [by which I mean those who have been with the company since a long time, rather than those who have vast experience but joined fairly recently] is that the mentality of indispensability slowly seeps into them as they keep adding their years within the company--though exceptions are always there. The irony/funny part of this situation is that many of them DON'T realize that this has happened--even though it may be quite apparent to others--which becomes a daunting task for those handling such individuals [telling this on the face of a senior professional without hurting COULD be tough].

You would need to figure-out how to handle such people--keeping in-mind that a single solution may not work for everyone.

Pl give more details about the situation so that more focused suggestions can come forth from the members @ CiteHR.

I have two points to suggest "Managing Senior Staff as HR" are:
1. Relationships with Seniors with approriate Chemistry Matching efforts.
2. Sincere attempts to understand Business Domain of the company and individual's pian areas.
This should help you to better manage the resources.

i feel this as complicated, ie HR rules are defined by the Company say for senior management level & then how to manage differently among these seniors
