We will also be starting our company newsletter. My suggestion do it on E-Mail. That is our plan. You can either use desk top publication or in power point.
For those who do not have e-mail you may print some copies and display it on your company's notice board.
Just incase if you wish save cost.

A newsletter is not as easy an exercise as it seems. I have over 10 newsletter productions under me for Asian Paints, Berger, Kotak, Otis etc. and each has a distinct profile. Some of these have been winning corp com awards at a national level for the past three years.
There a number of factors that operate. First the size and nature of your organisation, then the other channels of communication available and the kind of information disseminated through them, the culture of the organisation itself (this is necessary for the exercise to be fruitful), viability of production costs (this guides you to exploring various feasible options), etc.
I suggest you post some more details after which i will be able to give you specific guidelines on how to proceed.

I want to design an internal newsletter for my employees. Which will not be realted to business. We are looking to lighter side of any newsletter. Our is a start up company and we want this newsletter to enhance bond between employees by sharing there views and personal experience.

Hi Gunjan,
We have just come our with our maiden issue of our company magazine.And I have just the information you need to help you put together a newsletter.
We divided the articles we received into various categories - technical, non technical, work place events, home and family life, jokes, educational, misc. We then decided which are going to be regular features and which categories to club together so that each issue had diverse topics which was of interest to all levels of people and then went for the layout.
We went through a lot of company newsletters and in-magazines to get a general formatting picture and went according to what we found suitable to our company and situation.

We also have internal news letter which we have called it as "Every Wednesday" which has the following contents "Letter from CEO", Cartoons, Photos of the major events happenings in the company, New Joinees, About Business. The News Letter is sent through email and which has only a maximum of 4 pages and should have both images and articles.

Continuing with yesterday's discussion;

I suggest you conduct a sample audit first to get the ideas from a proper spread of colleagues as to what they would be looking forward to in the newsletter as content.

Then, you must create a proper launch campaign to generate sufficient interest in the launch. From my experience I must tell, rather warn, you that I have seen the newsletters of several topmost companies fizzle into a wasteful and ineffective exercise, produced just for the sake of producing it. As a communication person your responsibility will be not only producing the newsletter but also keeping the interest of the audience alive. A lot of people think that contests in the magazine are the best way but that is not usually the case. Anyway we can take up maintenance of sustained interest at a later time when you have already begun production. For the while I suggest that there should be an announced prize for the best suggestions on how the newsletter should be and the first issue must announce the winners with maybe an interview. Also, it would be interesting to run a contest for naming the newsletter. All this will help create a buzz and belonging. This is important, as at a later date, if properly managed and when your company grows, your newsletter will become an important connecting tool.

Deciding the proper frequency of the newsletter is also paramount.

Another important step that you must take is appointment of editorial co-ordinators as information flow always is an issue after 1-2 issues. So, a structured team which will be instrumental in collecting and forwarding info to the editor is a must. These people could be from different streams such as HR, Marketing etc for a cross-spread of information. I can't elaborate unless you have given me the nature of business your company is in and the strength and spread of employees (u have not mentioned it in ur reply). The nature of content also varies according to the profile of the employees, whether it is predominantly a young team, a greying team, techies, etc.

Hope these will give you an idea. I would suggest that you be more specific in terms of nature of information requirement with more specific details. Your query still remains a very general one.

Hello to all on this discussion,
we are also trying to bring out a newsletter in our organisation. it is on e-mail n also to be hosted on the HRD site of the organisation.
the main aim is to keep all the branches in the western region up-to-date with happenings in branches in the region. once this phase is successful we might expand it to the entire country.
if u all could plz forward my the various newsletters at - , it would be really helpful for me.
this being my first assignment of such sort i would really appreciate some help!

If you're working for an organisation where majority of communications is through the computer intranet, then monthly e-mail, as Bohari suggested is the best option.
Start the newsletter with achievements of the month by your employees.
like: some might have obtained additional qualifications, or awards or prizes etc. mention it and make it a point to congratualate them.
You could also add a milestome section where agenda of the month could be covered. Additionaly you can take a look at the steps completed in the month.
Include some funny incidents took place in that month.
Include birthdays of employees in that month.
etc.
think of all possible stuffs to be included.
But keep in mind that it should be long enough to convey details at the same time short enough to keep one interested.
