First let us know what kind of leave have they taken. Are you clubbing the leave alongwith weekly off i.e., sunday. I hope other than sick leave you cannot cut the leave for sunday as it is always excluded.

check your leave policy in that look out with are the suffix and prefix rules implemented this will give a clear idea whether leave will be deducted preceding a holiday & public holiday

In general terms, if employee is on leave on Saturday and Monday, definately Sunday will be counted in that leave. However, it depends upon company leave policy. In my company sunday/holidays are not counted as leave.
