I am working with TATA group as Officer - HR based out of Delhi. Can anybody help me out to make me understand what is skill matrix and how it is helpful in identifying training needs.

hi,
Skill Matrix is nothing you can create a matrix which will have all the skills required to perform a certain job role eg. problem solving, decision making, MS office, team management etc.....
now you will rate each of them on these skills every 3-6 months (depending upon your need)
post that you will get whose standing at which level for required skills and based on that you can get concrete data for TNA.
you can nominate people for training who are not upto the mark for any given skill which is required for their role.
hope it clears some surface for you.....

Hi Rajesh, I would suggest you to use HRIS for skill matrix. If you start updating skills of employees in xls sheet, after some period, its maintenance will become a tiresome activity.
