Gruesome attack: Barbaric move by the workers of Maruti. Such incidents are recurring in all parts of India, of late. The victims are HR officials: How to bring a full stop to such brutal behaviour of workmen against HR personnel? When there is scope for handling of disputes in a judicial manner, the action of Maruti workmen in taking law in their hands and setting a poor personnel ablaze needs to be addressed strongly and the Government and Police must take cognizance of the criminal offence and deal with the offenders with an iron hand to prevent recurrence of such and similar incidents anywhere.

Here are the top development's in the story......

Manesar: A charred body found at the Manesar plant of India's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki has been identified as that of Avnish Kumar Dev, a General Manager in the Human Resource department of the company. Ninety nine people, mostly workers, have been arrested for violence at the Maruti plant yesterday after workers and members of the management clashed; 85 were reportedly injured, among them two Japanese nationals.

Here are the top developments in this story:

1. The senior official's body has been identified by his brother-in-law. Mr Dev's charred remains were found after a fire in portions of the plant, including a control room, was doused. The company has, in a statement, accused the workers of setting the plant on fire.

2. The Manesar plant was shut down last evening and is closed today too. There is heavy security at the plant with 1,200 policemen deployed; Haryana's Director General of Police Ranjiv Dalal is at the plant monitoring the situation. Suzuki Motor Corporation said in its statement that it does not know when production will resume. "There is no damage to the production line. Damage only to administrative offices," the statement said.

3. Maruti shares fell 9 per cent on Thursday. Union Labour minister Mallikarjun Kharge said that the Centre could not intervene unless the state government submits a report. The chief labour commissioner has been asked to send a report. "I want to assure investors that such incidents will not affect the mood. But we have to take care of the management and the labour class," Mr Kharge said.

4. Randeep Surjewala, Industries Minister for Haryana, has said he does not rule out a political conspiracy behind the arson at the Maruti plant. He said most of those guilty had been rounded up and more arrests were likely over the next 48 hours. A Special Investigation Team or SIT is also looking into the violence, said Maheshwar Dayal, DCP South and East, Gurgaon.

5. The 99 people arrested have been charged with murder, attempt to murder, causing grievous injury and rioting. CCTV footage has been used for evidence and to piece together what happened on Wednesday evening.

6. Trouble is said to have begun when there was an altercation between a supervisor and a worker. The worker slapped his senior and was suspended. A senior HR executive, his injured head bandaged, said workers turned violent then, stormed a conference room and beat up senior officials of the company severely. Portions of the plant were set afire during the violence. When the fire was doused, the charred remains of Mr Dev's body were found.

7. In its statement, Maruti said at least 40 executives and managers were injured. The statement has alleged that the union had tried to prevent the management from taking disciplinary action against the worker who slapped his senior and that they had also prevented executives from leaving the factory, holding them hostage.

8. The workers, however, claim that the management started the fight. They have alleged that the supervisor had made remarks against the worker, who is a member of a Scheduled Caste. Maruti Suzuki Workers' Union (MSWU) General Secretary Sarabjeet Singh claimed that when workers protested against the supervisor's alleged remarks, management officials misbehaved with them and suspended the worker in question.

9. There has been much unrest at the Manesar plant. Wages are said to be a major cause for it. Last year, Maruti Suzuki had witnessed three separate instances of labour unrest at the plant, which mainly produces the Swift, causing a total production loss of about 83,000 units. In June 2011, a 13-day strike demanding the recognition of the erstwhile Maruti Suzuki Employees' Union (MSEU) had brought production to a standstill at the plant. It was followed by another stand-off between the management and the workers on August 29 that lasted 33 days. In October 2011, the company again saw its workers going on a 14-day strike that ended after the signing of a tripartite agreement between the management, workers and Haryana government representatives. The MSWU was formed after office-bearers of MSEU left the firm with a severance package of at least Rs. 16 lakh each.

Shocking news! What we have to do?

Dear all,

The killing of a Senior HR professional at the Maruti's Manaser plant was really shocking and very unfortunate. We had seen a couple of such incidents in the past. One was at the Madras Cement plant and the other was

at Pricol,Coimbatore.

Certainly it is a real concern for all aspiring HR

professionals. Professional bodies at the National Level should take this up seriously with the labour ministry.

Incidentally, the hof HR of Maruti is the President of NHRD this year.

All of us pray to the almighty for giving strength and

courage to Avinash Kumar's family to over come this grief.

2. Suggestions:

It is a matter of concern that such incidents are increasing.

It is a time to make an introspection by all stakeholders, think and devise appropriate preventive/precautionary measures. These incidents may be case studies.

While taking up the issues with labour ministry, we should suggest ways, means, remedies, controls and punishment also by way of Memorandum, suggestion, letter, appeal etc.

Yes, I do agree Ram. We all work for the people but the "people" do not see us as an agent who brings the management and the people together but keep us far as an enemy and that results in such unfortunate situations. Let us also pray for Avinash.

Yes, it is a really sad and shocking for all of us, and the accidents like this is not just increasing but taking a dangerous form.

And the cause of this all problem was when a supervisor allegedly got into an altercation with a junior worker and passed some disparaging and casteist remarks. We all know and well familiar with these kinds of things where sometime supervisors/Line Managers/seniors behave like this or act to control the work situation but to use these kind of words/language/statement is also not good and appropriate.

Here is not just need to take appropriate preventive/precautionary measures to prevent or tackle the situation like this but to look for the FACT, and ACT doing by Supervisors/Seniors too. We can’t avoid this. This is the actual matter of concern and we have to take serious action.

Most of time workers never replies on the comments made by the supervisors/Line Managers/Seniors and they also never realize what Worker has felt by their behavior or language, and this kind of situation invite the problems. Time has changed and our workers are not now a worker just. HR Managers and Supervisory plays a important role and are bridge between Management and Workers and we also have to be too smart to tackle this kind of situations.

Due to the bad experiences/cases of misbehaving by any employee/workers or bad act with any subordinates/colleagues, we have implemented the polices as a solution to handle and tackle these situations/problems but how many of we realizing the actual situation of workers in factory working under an Supervisor/Line Manager and what they daily experience. This is the matter of serious concern.

Here we can understand whom needs to take actions and what appropriate preventive/precautionary measures need to be adopt by us.

This is the live case which can gives us a big lesson for our better future and working system

when I read this news in news paper I really shocked that a person who spent his career to manage people, lost his life because of same people.....
May be I am not much aware about what people think about HR because I am currently passed out but as I heard is mainly in most of departments hates HR people....
