What I understand:
1) Challan means "Receipt for payment or delivery" or "Receipt of your payment with acknowledgment" or "Official receipt of payment"
2) Challan means the requisite form filled to pay cash, cheque, Demand draft in any Bank or any government office etc.

Actually challan is not a receipt, if you paid money on challan it is authorised payment, it goes to your PF account, if you takes loan on PF Accout it treated as repayment voucher.

For HR executive challans are generally related to PF&ESI challans where its particular format printed/to be filled by furnishing the details of ur PF/ESIC account numbers,amounts to be deposited,for the month of etc etc.
For general challans are those for penalty /fine by RTA/Traffic police etc its a revenue collecting term used by above official.
Another challan normally used while selling products thru invoices/bills which only contains non commercial descriptions of the sold/invoiced products and the seller gets a signature of receiver.
I hope most of the challans definations is given.

Challan is nothing but an instrument through which any payment or transaction is made. This will have the detailed information about the mode of payment/transaction. It cannot be called as receipt and can only be acknowledged.
