Hi Kavitha,
If I understand your query correctly, you want to know how crucial is it to incorporate fun / humor by way of activities/ examples/ jokes/ visuals etc even in topics of a serious nature eg. safety training or technical training.
My own view is that any training irrespective of the genre of training must be made interesting, should address the training needs and must be effectively implementable. To this end, fun is an essential element that acts as a glue to make the training more acceptable, the sharing better received, engages the participants attention and aids in recalling the learning.
However, incorporating fun into serious training involves extensive homework, reading and imagination. The simplest way is to incorporate imaginative/ humorous examples to reinforce learning points. reinforce the idea that prudence is more important than exceptional skill share the example of a millionaire taking a test before hiring a chauffeur for his new Mercedes. He told each of the 3 candidates that he would check their ability to drive as close as possible to edge of road whilst negotiating a winding mountain road. The first 2 drivers, performed exceptionally well and drove perilously close to the edge. However the third driver confessed that he wouldn't dare drive so close for the angers were too high and the risk not worth it. The millionaire hired the third candidate stating that the chauffeurs job was to drive prudently without endangering the life of the passenger.
The other way is to incorporate activities with some element of fun either by way of demonstration by the faculty or through participation by the audience. You can also use visuals to make the audience be more involved. I am sharing a PPT (sourced from Citehr) which illustrates and example relate to time management shared by Steven Covey for your ready reference.
Innovative faculty can also give on the spot assignments to be done by the participants during a lunch break. e.g. during a public speaking training, just before lunch ask trainees to bring one object normally not in their possession after lunch. Thereafter in the post lunch session ask each individual to come forward when their turn comes and speak for half a minute on why that object represents the person holding it.
The best trainers invariable make the training FUN for they are well aware that it is a sure shot way of getting participant involvement, the ideal way to help participants recall the learning and the easiest way to ensure that the sessions are lively and acceptable.
In my Inspirational and Motivational blogs listed below, I have followed a similar approach and have ensured that there are practical and pragmatic activities at the end of each post to make the learning easily understood and implementable.

Dear Jacob
Thank you.
For including Fun element in training for sure one must practice tested tools and methods.
As someone from ITjobzone rightly said that we shouldn't be going off track, and programs have to be designed this way.
For all this a good certification would definitely help

Dear Kavita
Humor/wit has following merits
1.Create interest
2.Get intention
3.help in memory
But it has following problems
1 Do not use irrelevant humor
2.Do not Explain humor (creates anti climax)
3.It is not everybody's cup of tea
4.Speaker should restrain from laughing
My Teaching Philosophy is "EDUTAINMENT"
