Dear Vikrant,

What you are thinking is not just a change of department but a change of function as a whole. Is this move part of your career plan? Have you taken into account the repercussions it will have in future? Have you done a SWOT Analysis of your career? What has driven you to take this decision? Is it that you are fed up with moving on the roads and now you prefer a little sedentary job?

The skillset required for each of these functions is different. To succeed in the purchase you need to have a thorough knowledge of your production process. The second important thing is you need to have a thorough knowledge of the market as well. When I say market, I mean to say knowledge of 5 R's of Purchase. These 5 R's are:

Buying the right quality
Buying the right quantity
Buying at the right time
Buying at the right price
Buying from the right source

These 5 R's may appear simple, however, this is not the case. A seasoned procurement professional also fails on one of the R's.

To succeed in the purchasing department, I recommend you doing a Diploma in Materials Management first and then ask for the transfer. However, please make it a point that from the career point of view your experience of marketing will not be counted if you enter into a purchase.

I conduct training programmes in the field of Supply Chain Management (SCM). To know more about my training activities in this field, you may click the following links and download the respective documents:

Dear Vikrant,

By the way, in addition to your regular MBA, you also need to do capsule courses that enhance your job specific knowledge. Your MBA degree will give you theoretical understanding of your subject knowledge. However, the capsule courses will help you in understanding practical part of your job.

I conduct the training programmes in the following subjects:

a) Purchase Management (basic level)

b) Purchase Management (advance level)

c) Inventory Management

d) Stores Management (2-days - for managers and not for storekeepers)

h) Strategic Procurement

i) Demand Forecasting

j) Quantitative Techniques for Procurement Professionals
