I urgently seek your help on the below mentioned issue.
One of my friend worked as a manager in a HR Consulting firm.
the company is completely unorganized.
On joining an appointment letter was issued. Post that all performance criteria and targets were communicated by e-mail from the director's email id.
After sometime an e-mail was sent confirming the employment with a salary hike....however no written proof was given nor was my friend's signature taken on any confirmation letter. Also, no salary slips were issued. The increased salary was paid by cheque.
My friend later decided to resign so an e-mail was sent to the director saying he wishes to resign. the director responded and asked my friend to come and do that handover which he did.
Post which my friend is following up for exit formalities to be completed. However, the management is not reverting to any calls nor e-mails.
My friends 1 month salary is also outstanding which they say will be forfeited as no notice period was served.
I told my friend that since no confirmation letter has been signed there is no need for notice period. Also the previous appointment letter stands void as the salary has been increased which reflects in bank statement.
Please advice on what can be done in this case.

Today, 12th Dec 2009 will be my last working day, and finally the time has come for me to bid farewell to (company name). It has been an honor for me to work with you all, national and international staff members. I have kept lots of good memories from (COMPANY NAME) that will remain in the heart and mind of me forever.
I feel obliged to mention that during my stay with (COMPANY NAME), I have enjoyed and learned a lot. It has been an unmatched experience and unexpected personal challenges. I am really impressed and admire the intelligence and leadership of our Executive Director, working with such a personality was a great honor for me. Actually I have no words to express my feelings at this moment.
I would like to thank you all so much for your support, cooperation and friendship during my tenure with (COMPANY NAME). Due to family consideration I am leaving Afghanistan, otherwise I wouldn’t leave such a great opportunity.
