I'm promoted as HOD of Logistics and customer service without pay raise and i have no prior experience in these departments. I accepted it along with my previous import export provider because i wanted to support the company.

But the profiles are not clear here , marketing department account manager keeps adding additional work on these 2 teams when i raised the issue to GM said they are handling this since joining so Cannot change and these team members says they highlighted this but previous manager didn't want to spoil their rapport with management.

I got no hand over from last manager so based on the help i could get from online resources i asked my team to stop assisting the marketing manager on their report and account team also and focus on accuracy of your work but then my boss jumped in and said this time was hired to assist marketing department then how is its customer care and likewise logistics person is doing invoicing and GR entry.

This is so confusing and i am not getting proper support and the HR says things are going against me because i asked this team members to revert others the way they write email or talk.

What do i do ? Should i continue with this promotion or leave it

Monika

Hi,

Not sure how you got promoted as HOD for Logistics and Customer Service without any prior experience. Though you had accepted the responsibility to support the company you should have discussed with your Reporting Officer about your scope of work, KRA etc prior to taking charge as HOD for Logistics and Customer Service.

As per your statement it looks you don't have any control over your Department / Team with other Dept Manager assigning work for your Members. So when you have no authority over your own Team / on their daily work schedule better discuss with your Reporting Officer about your role and responsibility and what is your POA for Logistics and Customer Service Dept as a HOD.

Even after discussions if the Reporting Authority wanted you to continue as a puppet HOD without any control over the department, then better you look for a better offer matching your experience and skill set.

Sit in a quite place, without any kind of disturbance. Time to introspect. If you have the new Job Description of the new role given to you, keep it in front of you. Do a small SWOT analysis. Your strengths as well as weaknesses in respect of the Job Description. Do an introspection, unbiased, and find out what are the areas you are familiar or good at and areas you can manage and also areas you are totally blank. Check out whether you can learn through books, learn through a mentor or an external training. Give yourself three months to learn the new skills and resolve to bridge the knowledge gap. Experience - you will get through your successes and failures. If you are still not confident, quit the organisation and pursue what you are good at. Best wishes

Thank you for your quick response and time.
I was hired as Sr Import executive 8yrs ago , during this period i have helped company saved on freight, clearance etc whereas old colleagues who spent 15-18yrs couldn't do well. Considering all these efforts my boss once asked me to help logistics manager to negotiate logistics contract at that time i didn't want to assist logistics but after he left i got to know that the whole team was corrupt and was taking commission from other vendors then i asked my boss to give me his position.
Sir I'm 35yrs , working since i was 17yrs . I needed a position and honestly I'm doing my best and trying not to quit.
I have controlled all those issues with vendors no team member is getting any benefit from outsiders and my boss has also acknowledged the same. But the real issues are internal and boss won't support me by going against what has been happening since ages.

I don't want to fail.

I would suggest that without the co-operation of the general manager, and the lack of training and mentoring to fulfil the requirements of this job, it could end up being a poisoned chalice.

I fail to understand the motives of the GM putting you into a critical job without the necessary training. This is an important position in the company, and he should be well aware of the financial disaster he could face if you are unable to turn things around.

In your shoes, I would be considering all my options and investigating other more suitable positions that match the skills, abilities and experience you already have, rather than starting all over again and having to learn a completely different profile.

Hi Good Morning,

As your Boss is not very keen about the happening as a individual what you can do. As the deciding Authority itself is keep quiet better you don't focus much on the issue. You have three options
1) to continue your work. live with the issues.

2) Inform you Boss that you are not in a position to handle the new assignment and will be able to able to handle your import executive work only. If your Boss agree with your decision then fine.

3) If not agreed by your Boss look for a better offer with clarity of role and responsibility.

Whether they will terminate you for refusing the new profile or not cannot be predicted. It depends on the employer. They may ask you to resign or terminate for insubordination or accept your decision also.

I have never given written acceptance to the HR or to my boss. It was verbal and then they sent an email in company group for the announcement of my new role. I did not acknowledge that email also.

Monika,

I see that you have written that you don't want to fail.

Here are some questions to ask yourself:

1. Do you like the new profile?
2. Do you have the skills and knowledge to do it?
3. What support you need from others?
4. How can you communicate the support to the right people?
5. Are you getting support from the new team members?
6. Do you have someone who can help you to upskills?
7. Are you willing to get coached via an external coach?
8. Did you have a discussion with your senior about what if you do not take this position?
9. Do you want to go through a challenge where you are not clear of what is expected from you and no support is being provided to you?
10. What stops you from talking to your supervisor?
11. What if you fail?
12. How about looking for a new job?

Only you can find answers to these questions. All the best.
