Hi AnjuRN,

Last week, 15th August 2020 - Independence Day happened to fall on a Saturday, and many establishments following a 5-day workweek had their weekly holiday on this day. Consequently, they did not receive any extra holiday or compensation. Except for essential staff who were required to work on a compulsory festival holiday, there is no obligation to provide compensatory time off or holiday wages. Instead, employees can be given additional holidays for other festivals like Diwali or other important local festivals by adjusting the overall list of holidays in accordance with the approved Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) or Leave policy in effect. Some units have the practice of declaring the next working day as a paid holiday if a compulsory holiday falls on a Sunday or a weekly off day. The specific practices followed may vary among different units.

Please let me know if you need further clarification or have any questions regarding this policy.

Thank you.

Strictly speaking, in case of a coincidence of a national or festival holiday with the weekly off, the employee should be allowed to avail of the holiday. In this case, no compensatory off is required to be given.
