Dear Cynthia,
The Tours and Travel Industry falls under the purview of the Shops and Establishment Act. Therefore, you may follow this act of your state. Roughly, I can say that working hours are for 8 hours. For additional work, employees may work for one more extra hour for which they are eligible for overtime (OT) payment.
Otherwise, a few companies make working hours nine hours long. These working hours include a half-hour lunch/dinner break and two 15-minute tea breaks. This is also acceptable.
Thanks,

Hi Dinesh Divekar,
Thank you for the reply. Last month, the working hours were 8 hours. Now, it has changed to 9 hours to improve productivity. Please suggest how many working hours we should follow for this industry.

Dear Cynthia,
If you have extended the duration of working hours from 8 to 9 hours, then you need to issue a circular to this effect. A copy of the circular has to be displayed on the notice board. In the notice, clearly mention the timing of the working hours, the break timing for the first tea break, the break timing for lunch, and the timing for the second tea break.
If the number of persons working in your company is not more than a few, you may obtain the signature of each employee after they have read and understood the contents of the circular. This will be a valuable record for you.
Thanks,
Dinesh Divekar

Dear Madam,
For working hours, rest intervals, and OT, you are governed by the State Shops and Establishment Act. The daily maximum working hours excluding lunch recess are prescribed as 8 hours, and weekly hours are 48 hours. If the daily/weekly hours are exceeded, OT will be applicable at double the rate. A weekly off of one day after 6 days of work is compulsory. Depending on the business requirements, you may arrange staggered offs, but no arrangement should result in an employee working continuously for more than 10 days without a day off. If you have worked for 9 hours daily for six days, it will entail OT hour payment for the number of hours worked in excess of 8/48 hours. For more details, please refer to the Shops Act of your state.
