Hi All,

I have a doubt regarding the notice period. If an employee falls sick during the notice period and doesn't come to the office for 30 days, does his notice period get extended accordingly? Or else, what can be done to handle this situation?

Please advise.

Hi,

As a responsible employee, one has to ensure that they pass on the knowledge to the employee taking over the charge. The very purpose of serving the notice period is to ensure a smooth transition of work without any issues for the employer and the person who will be taking that position. It is imperative that if you have not completed this part, you may be asked to extend the period and fulfill the necessary requirements. The exact number of days may vary, but the key is the manner in which you transfer knowledge, hand over responsibilities, and ensure that the person who has taken over is comfortable with the work as much as possible.

Take this in a positive manner and ensure that your relieving and recommendation letters are received without any issues, along with your full and final settlement of dues. As a responsible employee, one should not complain about routine tasks and avoid bringing negative energy within oneself.

Thanks and Regards

Apart from what is written by learned Aks 17, I would add that the employee needs to produce conclusive medical proof of illness. The employee has a duty to hand over his job/equipment, etc., to the company and pass on his knowledge regarding the work to the incumbent or another person decided upon by the company. He needs to fulfill his responsibilities completely, willingly working for a few days and transferring knowledge to the satisfaction of the employer.

Why not? When a company terminates someone without any notice, we take shelter of the law. But when an employee secures better employment elsewhere, no law, ethics, morals, or responsibilities are binding on him/her.

To avail 30 days of sick leave, one has to be hospitalized. He can't just stay at home and get miraculously cured immediately after the expiry of the notice period to join the new organization.

Put yourself in the position of the person you are dealing with; only then will you realize the hardships and difficulties the other person has to face.

Hi Nagarajan Sekar,

Leave during the notice period depends on your company's policy. If there is a genuine health problem, you can submit the necessary reports and avail leave. The company can relieve you by not paying the salary for that month or extend your notice period if no other employee is available to take up your work.
