Managing remote teams is indeed difficult but in my experience, it can be done if you use the right tools and hire the right people. If you hire people who are comfortable as remote employee and know how to be productive in that set up, you will do fine. With the help of tools and software’s available in the market one can assure productivity.

Skype for video conferencing
Dropbox for file and data sharing
www.hivedesk.com for Time tracking and productivity management - Paid
www.slack.com for communication tool
Hangouts for instant messaging in addition to things like Google Apps.
