I have 4 years of experience in HR, specifically in Recruitment in the BPO sector, working for 2 different corporates. Recently, I have resigned from my last assignment. Currently, I am receiving offers from some good consultants for the same role or a senior position within the recruitment profile.

I am contemplating whether moving from a corporate setup to consultancy would be a wise decision or if it might be considered a demotion in my career. I would appreciate your advice on this matter.

I think it depends on the consultancy that you are being offered. Go for those that already have a hold in the market. Never choose consultancies that have just started their business or are completely new in any industry. The reason is that these types of consultancies may give you additional responsibilities like business development (BD), which is not necessarily a bad thing, but you may not be compensated for it. If you have the opportunity to work with market leaders, definitely consider it as you will gain a lot of exposure to current market trends rather than starting as a newcomer. It is wise to transition from a corporate role to a reputable consultancy as you may face limitations in terms of salary, growth, and key result areas (KRAs) in a corporate setting, whereas in consultancy, you can both earn and learn.

Lastly, in a consultancy, you can earn many incentives that you may not receive in corporate firms. I hope this information helps you make a wise decision.

You have to decide based on your long-term goal.

My suggestion would be not to join if in a consultancy you are getting more or less the same profile. The reason for putting down your paper and your financial condition is not known to me. If you can wait till you can get any offer from a company, it will be good and advisable. Because even if you join any consultancy just for a few months, then also working there and managing leave for further interviews is going to be very difficult. Let me also tell you that work culture and work pressure in a consultancy are very different from corporate environments. However, it is also true that there are very few consultancies which are organized and their policies are also very streamlined, so working in one of those can also be an option.

As you have 4 years of experience in corporate settings, you can get lucrative offers from some consultancies. But, in my view, you should only join if you are getting an offer from a well-known consultancy (if not a well-known brand, then, as I said above, a good consultancy) with a senior profile and a good package.

You also need to understand that it's a little difficult to transition from a consultancy to a corporate environment. Although the transition from corporate to consultancy is not as difficult. So, do think about your future.

There is a saying that it's better to work in a consultancy with a good and challenging team leader profile rather than working in a big company with a very small profile.

Joining a consultancy will not make your career graph lean down; it's only about which kind of consultancy and job profile you choose. A good salary is not always everything; the work environment is also very important.

I have tried to explain all the pros and cons to you. So, based on your present circumstances, you can decide whether you need to join a consultancy or wait for some time for a company offer.

I would say , it depends on your passion…. You will learn lot and will get a chance to explore various skill sets , customers . This will mold us , in terms of our adoptability and aggressiveness.

Hello Varshue,

There are no "right" or "wrong" ways of handling such situations. It all depends on what your career priorities are.

Your experience so far has been in Recruitment. Many HR professionals wish to move towards Core HR/Generalist roles at this stage of their career, while some like to stick to Recruitment. Each one's reasons for a decision are typically unique and can't be taken as the Bible—only for guidance.

In general, for a long-term career in Recruitment, Consultancies are invariably the best. This is because any Corporate recruitment role (irrespective of designation) essentially is limited to the needs of THAT COMPANY, whatever the domain. While the focus in any Consultancy (the larger or more professional ones, not the small-time ones, like other members already mentioned) essentially has to be much larger, cutting across domains/sectors, by virtue of their business model. This would enable you to add a lot of value (from the Recruitment experience point of view) to your resume.

However, if your goal is to move into Core HR roles along your career path, then Consultancies are not the right ones for you—unless the job role involves handling clients to formulate their HR Practices too (which only the large Consultancies are involved in).
