Dear Vishalpatel,
You want to celebrate National Safety Day on March 4th, but why?
The reason is to motivate employees and make them safety conscious, I believe. But why are other departments not celebrating their days like production day, Quality day, maintenance day, Procurement day, Finance day, etc.? Because these departments are all parts of the core business, and their employees will work to achieve their targets failing which appropriate disciplinary actions will be initiated. Everyone is accountable. Safety has no such target, and if there is one, it is only imaginary. Who is accountable for safety? The Safety Officer. No!
The function of the safety department is to satisfy statutory requirements to the extent that the organization is not caught and penalized by authorities. All other activities are to suit the culture of the organization and are often questionable.
What is National Safety Day? At least you may know; I hope.
You are forced to celebrate National Safety Day. Okay, please go ahead. Here is my answer on celebrating National Safety Day in a befitting manner:
It all depends on the resources, and I hope your company has allotted sufficient money and time off for this. There are many items from which you can choose the pack to suit your organization.
It is time to start.
1. Announce competitions on: Safety Posters, Safety Slogans, Safety essays, safety short stories, Safety cartoons, etc. In some cases like safety essays, you may give a topic if possible.
2. Organize and conduct safety quiz competitions.
3. If possible, arrange to conduct safety drama competitions.
4. Organize and conduct good safety training courses with the help of external agencies, preferably for managerial staff who really need exposure to occupational safety more than lower-level employees.
5. Organize housekeeping competitions among departments.
6. Arrange to fix banners at prominent places announcing National Safety Day celebrations along with an eye-catching safety slogan.
The above activities are to be concluded well before March 3rd.
On March 4th, i.e., National Safety Day,
Arrange an exhibition of safety statistics of the organization, photos of accidents, Personal Protective Equipment, Fire protection devices, Prize-winning safety Posters, cartoons, etc.
At the gate itself, arrange to distribute safety day badges with suitable safety slogans for everyone to wear all through the day. It could also be distributed through department heads to all, even on the previous day.
In the morning, arrange to hoist the Safety flag by the CEO with all the employees gathered around, followed by administering the safety pledge to all the employees. Distribute sweets if affordable.
By evening, organize the safety day meeting with eminent speakers/statutory authorities; distribute the prizes for winners of the competitions and end with cultural programs, preferably with a safety theme.
I gave you the idea.
Hope you good luck and regards,
