That’s a cynics view. I have conducted seminars and workshops where the delegates have not paid for attending. Have a nice day. Simhan A retired academic in the UK

Dear Sangeeta,

From your ID, I have assumed that you are an MBA student raising this question. However, I am not sure why you have raised this question. Though Sunil says there is no difference, there are considerable differences. The differences can be attributed to the purpose they cater for. They are also used to cater to different learning styles; the number of topics to be covered, the number of delegates or participants involved, etc.

Hence, kindly search the web using Google where you will find links to websites such as http://www.creativeartistryfx.com/di...vs_seminar.pdf.

Have a nice day.

Definition: A seminar is a lecture or presentation delivered to an audience on a particular topic or set of topics that are educational in nature. It is usually held for groups of 10-50 individuals. A seminar is frequently held at a hotel meeting space or within an office conference room.

A workshop is a series of educational and work sessions. Small groups of people meet together over a short period of time to concentrate on a defined area of concern.

Discussion

Purposes for workshops may vary.

Examples:
Informing
Problem-solving
Training

SYMPOSIUM IS a meeting of a number of experts in a particular field at which papers are presented by specialists on particular subjects and discussed with a view to making recommendations concerning the problems under discussion.

CONFERENCE IS a prearranged meeting for consultation or exchange of information or discussion (especially one with a formal agenda)

Dear Mr. Sastri and Ravi,

I was trying to coax Sangeeta to learn to search and read for herself rather than rely on us to copy and paste from the net. Thank you, Mr. Sastri, for giving information on where you extracted it from. That's the appropriate way to post material copied from the web. A number of contributors forget to do that.

Have a nice day.

It is a very interesting question, and I agree with the statement of Mr. Avimtnl regarding this topic. Anyway, it is a very nice topic. In general, there is no difference because all are related to learning, and these are the methods of learning for executives and manager levels.

thanx for the excellent definitions on the difference between Seminar, Workshop, Symposium & Conference. Keep it up.

The differences are as follows:

In a seminar, there is a speaker who gives a lecture with highlights, scope, importance, benefits, and limitations on the respective topic. After the lecture, the audience can ask questions.

In a workshop, simulation exercises take place related to the topic being conducted by the speaker, which means learning while doing the work.

In a symposium, group discussions on the related topic take place between the galaxies of speakers, and there is a mediator who coordinates the discussion. After the discussion, the audience can ask questions via a slip through the mediator.

Last but not least, a conference is like an official meeting where speakers directly interact with the audience. It can be described as a brainstorming session.

I hope I put forth my best efforts to help you solve your query. If there are any corrections needed, kindly let me know.

I go to a lot of these kinds of meetings, and I agree that the terminology is pretty confused and confusing. I don't think anyone can clearly distinguish between them. None of these has hard and fast rules, though.

1. Seminars:
Seminars are educational events that feature one or more subject matter experts delivering information primarily via lecture and discussion. A seminar is often one person giving perhaps an hour-long lecture, although there could be more than one speaker as well.

2. Workshop:
A workshop has the sense of being a relatively small event with all parties involved in the discussion (although this is not always the case). Workshops tend to be smaller and more intense than seminars. This format often involves students practicing their new skills during the event under the watchful eye of the instructor.

3. Symposium:
A symposium suggests that more than one person is speaking. A symposium is typically a more formal or academic gathering, featuring multiple experts delivering short presentations on a particular topic.

4. Conference:
A conference is pretty general and, in fact, could mean something with thousands of participants or something with just a few participants. None of these are hard and fast rules, though. Conferences often feature keynote presentations delivered to all attendees, as well as multiple break-out sessions. Attendees often expect to receive information about industry trends and developments.

I hope this information may be helpful to you.

Have a great time.
