Can you tell me the exact difference between a relieving letter and an experience certificate? Which is preferable? Suppose I am offered a job in another company, which letter should I show to them.

Thanks & Regards

Hi,

The difference is really that the relieving letter only states formally that you have been relieved. I use it in my company to make sure that a new employee has resigned from his previous company and he is not trying to do two jobs at the same time (or he could just have taken a holiday to try out another company).

The experience letter is a letter that states what kind of experience you have, whether the company has been happy with you, etc.

Of course, there can be differences from company to company, country to country, but these, I would say, are the differences (the big picture).

Kind regards, Randi

Hi,

This is an example of an experience letter. Of course, you would then write something more specific for the person that you are relieving - like he/she worked on this and this project, this and this technology, etc.

Kind regards,

Dear,

A relieving letter has a legal application. In a relieving letter, it is mentioned that the concerned employee has handed over the charge of the documents, drawings, files, keys, and all other belongings which he/she has in possession during the tenure of his service. A relieving letter verifies that the employee has handed over the charge, whereas an Experience certificate verifies the contents such as Date of Joining, Date of Resignation, Date of Relieving, Designation at the time of joining & at the time of relieving & the conduct.

Nice question asked by you.

Relieving letter suggests that you have handed over all the documents and items of the organization. There is nothing that you owe to the organization. It talks about detachment between employer and employee. It also suggests that the employer or employee have agreed to scrap their relation.
On the other hand experience letter talks about duration of your stay in the company and your last designation.
These days, when you move from one company to another they ask for Relieving Letter or Resignation Acceptance Letter to be ensured that you have actually left the organization. In good olden days…people use to take leave from their current employer…go and work with prospective employer…learn about the culture and environment and then suddenly disappear.
So, asking for relieving letter is just to trash such practice in the corporate world.
I hope this will help.

Hi Randi,

I am currently working in one company. If I were to quit this job, what specific documents would another company typically request, such as an experience letter, service letter, or relieving letter? Could you please provide me with the appropriate format for these documents?

Thank you in advance.

Hi Sukhi,

I appreciate the ease with which you differentiated between the two types of letters.

Can you tell me if it is necessary to include the address of the concerned employee in the relieving letter format? If you could provide me with a format where the employee's address is mentioned, I would greatly appreciate it.

Hello,

The purpose of both relieving and experience letters is entirely different. Talking about relieving letters, they are used to state that an employee’s resignation has been accepted and s/he is relieved from his or her duties and responsibilities. This helps a company to ensure that a candidate is no longer associated with his or her previous company.

On the other hand, an experience letter spells out the total experience and abilities of an employee.

Relieving letter vs experience letter? Well, most companies in India only ask for the experience letter. But, that doesn’t mean a relieving letter is not important.

Hope this helps you.
