Dear Komal!!! You need not feel offended. HR guy has to deal with multiple type of situation and in certain client meeting a TT may look quite out of place. I know HR heads who keep cigrettes even though they do not smoke. Well it is a way to make the other guy comfortable. Do you drink doesn't mean being drunk. No orgn. would brook such a guy. Having a couple of drinks really helps to lighten up the situation and may be helpful to get out from a tight situation.

Dear Komal,
I am in an organisation where parties are mandatory for everyone to attend. However, our rule book mentions that forcing a drink on somebody is a strict NO NO.
Many a times we misinterpret the thought behind a statement. In this instance, the employer could be meaning that your profile may demand you to attend functions where drinks are being served. In some sections of our society, even attending such functions (where you might not be drinking alcohol) is considered inappropriate. Another message that the employee might be wanting to give is that your attendance in such functions would be mandatory because of the post that you hold.
In my opinion maam, you may reconsider your decision.

Sanjay

In my opinion, you may reconsider the decision of joining the company. Actually this type of practices must not be promoted. Regards Shyam

being a HR person, we should take care of others, also guide others. Even in the party, when things go worse, we only take them out of crisis and guide them properly, otherwise we have to bear the unnecessary blames. Hence we may avoid this kind of parties, or otherwise, have to take part with few fruit juices or soft drinks.
Even if we want to drink let it have the same with our own intimate friends/family members that too with small quantity.
HR mean highly resource, do not convert into highly risk.

Hi
This is something which is really shocking but we cannot deny the fact that in big corporate events drinking has just become a trend. Its Good to refuse such an offer because today they need a person who drinks in future they might demand for more.
There are other many corporates you can apply for, but compromising on such terms, doesn't look good & safe.

Here question has two aspects, viz.,
  • whether is it right on the part of the organisation desiring their employees having no aversion from drinking if required beacuse of organisation's need.
  • whether person joining an organisation, was conveyed the requirement of drinking alcohal as part of the job, should start taking drinks.
  1. On organisation's point of view, there is nothing wrong. Organisation has every right to select person fitting to the job requirements whether it is for specific skill, quality, personality or otherwise.
  2. Now, the question is whether a person wants to take drinks for official purposes or for personal reason, is his person choice.
If your don't drink (Hard or soft, as required), then don't join. Simple. But don't raise such silly questions. See, sometimes drinking is a disqualification and sometimes, it is qualification. So, don't take it on your heart. This happens in Corporate World which is not a holy place always for everybody.

there is nothing wrong in asking a candidate whether he/she drinks or not. since this particular portfolio requires drinking/etc, it is good that the employer comfirms it before appointment.we all know, that there are people who are ready to do anything for money. it is a mad mad world! try to drink once in a while. it is nice. don't you want to be equal to men?
