Dear Community,
My new workplace doesnot allow free Internet access. This is the first time I'm encountering this situation which set me thinking....How Valid or Effective is 'restricted Internet Access' in office?
Obviously the logic is to prevent employees from wasting precious office time browsing when they should ideally be working. My contention is ..if the employees have been given their KRAs and deadlines, why should'nt the company treat them as adults capable of managing their own time?
Isn't restriction a regressive measure?
Would like your comments and opinions on the same.

In many organisations only Certain employees are provided with access to the Internet to assist them in performing their jobs. The Internet can be a valuable source of information and research. In addition, e-mail can provide excellent means of communicating with other employees, customers and clients, outside vendors, and other businesses. Many of the employees doen't use the Internet with common sense and good judgment.

The Internet is a worldwide network of computers that contains millions of pages of information. Many of these pages include offensive, sexually explicit, and inappropriate material. In general, it is difficult to avoid at least some contact with this material while using the Internet. Even innocuous search requests may lead to sites with highly offensive content. In addition, having an e-mail address on the Internet may lead to receipt of unsolicited e-mail containing offensive content.

Some of the empoyees send mass mailings or chain letters, spending excessive amounts of time on the Internet.

I have also seen several employees playing games, engaging in online chat groups, printing multiple copies of documents, or otherwise creating unnecessary network traffic.

The computers and computer accounts given to employees are to assist them in performance of their jobs. Employees should not have an expectation of privacy in anything they create, store, send, or receive on the computer system. The computer system belongs to the Company and may only be used for business purposes.

Personally I am against providing internet access upto certian grades of employees. For all others there should be a restriction on JObs and Career Development Sites/ Gambling-betting sites/Sex/Online Trading/Chats/Personal Emails/Sports sites.

This is for now and await others comments also

I do agree with ur view point..may be the organization is standing on thier own point.. here i would like to say is if u really deserve to work on the net and u have valid reasons for ur acccebility to net u should present ur need to the management .. i dont think that Management should have any objections if u can manage ur time and meet the competencey level according to the organizational requriement..but the purpose of restrction by the management should be exercise in a bonafide intenetion of the organization
