I'm working as an HR Executive for 6 months and graduated in September 2004. I would like to do an SAP course. However, everybody is saying, "If you want to do SAP, there will be no opportunities for 2 years. You will only get them after 4 years." Is this true? I completed my MBA in September 2004, so I will only have 2 years. I believe there is another course available from Oracle+PeopleSoft. I'm not sure which one it is. Is that a good option? Which one should I pursue? Can you assist me?

Hi Kavitha,

You need not be confused. Basically, there are two types of jobs associated with SAP in any organization. One is the implementation part, and the other one is the support function. Implementation means you have to develop the program for the organization, whereas support means it is already implemented, and you have to just work on it. Implementation is a vast job, and basically, companies look for experienced people. As already been told, Siemens is the certified trainer for the same, but it is very expensive (approximately Rs 3 L). Now it depends on how much you want to spend. Siemens trains you first and then lets you work on implementation projects under their guidance so that you get implementation experience. Apart from that, you can do a one-year course from C-DAC (Noida). Though it's not certified as the certification lies only with Siemens, it's a government institute, and the course fee is also approximately Rs 60,000/-, which makes it a good bargain as it also gives you live experiences. Many companies take people from this institute because the faculties are themselves top honchos of SAP companies. It's an overall good deal.

Apart from this, there are many private institutes offering SAP courses at a cost of Rs 25,000/- to 30,000/-. These institutes are good for working people as they have flexible timings, and if you have good domain experience, then it helps you a lot. I am an HR professional with an experience of 3.5 years, and since I can't afford to leave my job, I am doing the course from such an institute in the evening hours and on Sundays. For Siemens or C-DAC, you need to devote full time.

SAP is very much in demand, be it implementation or support function. You can go for the same without hesitation. What ultimately matters is your knowledge part. It will help you in the future.

Oracle and Peoplesoft are also ERP solutions and are in demand but not as much as SAP.

Hi Sarika,

As already mentioned, the role of a functional consultant is to implement SAP in an organization. I believe you are referring to a Support consultant, whose responsibility is to provide support where SAP has already been implemented. Within the SAP HR module, there are various sub-modules. Recruitment is one of these sub-modules with branches such as Workforce Requirement & Advertising, Applicant Administration, Applicant Structure, Applicant Selection, and Applicant Master Data, among others. By gaining exposure to SAP HR, you can work on these different sub-modules based on your domain experience. I have recently enrolled, so I am currently reviewing the fundamentals. Once I have a better grasp, I will be able to provide more detailed information. I hope this clarifies your query. Please feel free to ask anything, as knowledge grows through sharing.

As far as your queries are concerned, Vamsi, let me clarify that almost all aspects of HRM are covered in SAP HR. You can definitely complete the course with ease. Nothing is impossible in this world if you have the willpower. You also have an advantage as you have theoretical knowledge of HRM.

Let me clarify one more thing. SAP and Peoplesoft are both ERP solutions provided by different solution providers. The top five ERP solution providers are as follows:
1. SAP AG
2. Oracle Apps
3. J.D. Edwards
4. Peoplesoft
5. Baan

I would suggest you, Vamsi, to go for SAP rather than Peoplesoft as SAP is the most widely used ERP package and has the most number of functional modules.

As I have already mentioned, Siemens is the only authorized training provider globally for SAP, which has been developed by them. I am not sure about Mumbai, but here in Delhi, they have a training center in Gurgaon (NCR Area). You can inquire with Siemens representatives in Mumbai about this. The approximate cost is Rs 3 Lakh. Additionally, C-DAC, a government institute for advanced computing studies, offers a course in SAP. They have a center in Noida (Delhi NCR), and likely in Mumbai as well. The cost is about Rs 60,000.

It's a good opportunity. Both Siemens and C-DAC offer full-time courses. There are also private institutes in Delhi/NCR that provide SAP training. They offer theoretical exposure along with practical work on the ERP package, which, when combined with your domain experience, can be beneficial for securing good job opportunities. Their charges are approximately Rs 30,000. Similar institutes may exist in Mumbai. These institutes cater well to working professionals by offering flexible timings according to your convenience, including Sunday classes.

Thank you for the information you provided on SAP. I have been working as a Recruiter for the past year and completed my MBA in 2004. I am interested in pursuing SAP. My friends have mentioned that companies are currently seeking candidates with real-time experience. Given that my domain experience is only one year, I am unsure how to gain real-time experience if I were to learn SAP at a private institute.

I was very interested in joining the SAP HR course, but had so many doubts in my mind like whether I could be settled in a good job, and if the course would be useful for me to fetch a good job. I attended many demos and came to know that SAP HR is a good course, especially for those who want to make a career in the HR department. Where you do the course is not that important, but how well you practice it is most important.

So, people who have a strong desire to grow in the HR field must do it. After completing SAP HR, companies will select us as end users, and with experience, we can be promoted as SAP Consultants.

In terms of my work experience, I have 2 1/2 years of domain experience as an HR Executive. I am not interested in working as a software developer in the functional aspect of SAP, where we need to implement according to the organizational need.

(1) Can you please tell me which is the better option between these two?

(2) Can I pursue a career as an SAP-HR support consultant?

(3) Is there a separate course for this, or should I take a course in SAP HR from training institutes?

Dear Sarika, even Oracle Apps also have good scope. It is now gaining a good market. Oracle Apps is launching Oracle 12i version in December. In the middle of 2008, it is launching a new version - ORACLE FUSION. As you all know, PeopleSoft is taken over by Oracle, and Oracle Apps is introducing this FUSION, which integrates both PeopleSoft and Oracle 12i. This information I got from one of the Oracle HRMS consultants.

Upon my experience there, I found that it is a very simple application, similar to our MS-Office. With practice using the software on your PC and following some basic guidelines, you can work on it.

Hi Nasreen,

You shared good knowledge about SAP-HR. However, in the current scenario of SAP-HR requirements, we need more domain experience. Two years is not sufficient, and now companies are seeking at least 3+ years of SAP experience. I have completed SAP-HR but have settled as an HR Executive in a software company. None of the institutes you mentioned, including Reliance, are able to assist HR professionals.

I apologize if you feel discouraged, but this is the reality I have experienced personally. I have also witnessed individuals with excellent SAP-HR knowledge struggling to find jobs.

Dear Mr. Amit,

I am working in a consultancy since January and pursuing my MBA final year through correspondence. I also have an interest in pursuing SAP.

I received an email regarding the SAP HR course from IEC Technologies in Chennai. They offer flexible hours, and the fee structure is 15,000. Additionally, if they facilitate a job placement for me through their client, I would need to pay an additional 15,000.
