An agreement can be oral, by exchange of letters, or by the parties to the agreement formally signing it, as per the Contract Act 1872 to make them legal and valid.

A formal agreement has a lot of advantages as the terms of the agreement are clearly defined in the document, so there is lesser scope in varying interpretation of them.
