Dear Team, I am a teacher working in a reputed CBSE school. Now i secured a better job and i need to quit form my present school. As per school policy i gave my resignation and 3 months notice period on 7/4/2018. My notice period include moths of April, May, and June. But in May we have summer break for 25 days i.e. from 6th of may to 26th of may. Now today on 10/4/2018 i got a message form my principal that notice period includes only working days, therefore my notice period will end in the month of July. But in my appointment letter it is clearly mentioned that notice period will be of 3 months not 3 months of working days. So kindly guide me to take the right step and with your guidance i will approach them. If any website on which details regarding notice period is available so please send the link to me so that i will meet them with all documents in my support and all proofs.
Thanks and Regards

Unfortunately, most of the managements of private educational institutions assume their rules and regulations are unquestionable as if they are God-given. In teaching profession vacations are paid holidays and as such they have to be treated as duty for all service purposes. I am afraid whether the principal's interpretation in reckoning the notice period for resignation excluding the intervening vacation is right. Better check with the State's Private Schools Rules.

Dear Mr. Ajay,
The reply provided by Mr Umakanthan is appropriate as per law. You submit your resignation and ask the management to release on date the three month notice is likely to be completed from date of resignation.
Please check whether any school manual is there in place where the policies are laid down.

Dear colleague,
If your appointment letter states three months' notice and not working days , then intervening holidays will be part of notice period.
It clearly looks like an afterthought by interpreting it as working day with malicious intent to prolong your stay.
You write to the authority that you have fulfilled the condition of the notice period of three months and you will walk away after its completion after completing due formalities.

First of all, you should once again revise your contract, and then the rules of your educational institution. I found myself in the same situation a couple of years ago and could only remember metaphors in catcher in the rye since I worked as a literature teacher. So figurative language quotes from The Catcher in the Rye poured out of me. In the end, I just turned to the appropriate authority and solved the problem.
