Good Day Seniors!

This post is in regards to how I can step into the HR field. In fact, I have completed my Masters in HRD in 2012 and am presently working with a shipping company for the past 1.5 years in operations. Please let me know which topics I should prepare for to be interviewed for an HR generalist profile. I am aware that landing a generalist profile won't be easy, but if I could be guided on the areas I need to focus on, that would be of great help. To provide more insights, I also have experience in recruitment for over a year previously, but as I have always aimed to work in Core HR, I am still searching for such opportunities.

Dear Cupkin,

To make decisions easily, first, you need to list out the options that you have at hand. These are as follows:

a) Continue in your existing job and grow into the operations of a shipping company. There is nothing wrong with this option. The Indian economy is growing, and shipping companies are bound to grow as well.

b) Get into recruitment. This may give you a foothold in HR; however, if you choose this option, you will have to abandon 1.5 years of experience in operations at the shipping company.

c) Search for a new job in an HR Generalist profile.

d) Try to become an HR Generalist in the existing shipping company.

From my point of view, you should consider option (a).

Thank you for your advice. It seems I should continue here rather than being more inclined towards core HR. But somewhere down the line, it stays in my head that I should be in HR, maybe because of qualifications and even my fellow batch mates, a few of which are in core HR now :(.

Dear Sneha,

Nothing wrong per se if you work in operations with qualifications in HR. After all, whether in a shipping company or any other service company or factory, it is Ops that calls the shots, not HR! I have seen Purchase managers doing exceedingly well even with qualifications in MBA (HR).

Being in Ops improves your chances of becoming a CEO. Hardly any HR professional becomes a CEO.

Please remember your college days. Have you not said, "I joined HR because HR is a people function"? Now is the time to produce results by getting work done from and by the people. Your leadership skills are tested more in Ops than in HR.

To advance your career in shipping, you may take various courses related to Dangerous Goods (DG), fire and safety, or marine Ops. This will enhance your job credibility.

Are you good at Maths? If yes, then use analytical tools to solve Ops-related problems. This will boost your prestige.
