Hi All,

As I was working in an organization and two weeks before, I went abroad for my personal trip. I had submitted my resignation, and they asked me to stay and serve a 90-day notice period. However, I was unable to complete the notice period and left the company without informing or obtaining prior authorization from the management.

Now, unfortunately, my visa has been canceled, and I would like to rejoin the organization. Two weeks before I left, they sent me a Recall Cum Show Cause letter. They specified that if they do not receive a response from me within 5 days, they will assume I am no longer interested in continuing to work with the company, and necessary actions will be taken.

Since I was absent from the company, I now require an experience and relieving letter. Will they allow me to rejoin? How should I proceed? Please advise!

Dear Ishak,

Rules in life, whether relating to our personal life or work life, are there only to be scrupulously followed and not to be flouted according to our convenience. You intended to go abroad and for that purpose put down your papers means that it is not a personal trip for pleasure or for holidaying but only after greener pasture. Of course, it is neither wrong nor unethical on the part of an employee to leave his present job for a better one elsewhere. When one's employability is high, his employment naturally tends to be in a flux and he can be a potential target for Corporate head-hunters. But, the organization that nurtured your skills by providing a job to you and by imparting necessary training and facilitating hands-on experience should not be let down and left in the lurch like this because of your immediate personal gains. You could have planned your exit well in advance and fulfilled your notice period commitment in the appropriate manner so that the separation could have been perfect and peaceful. Instead, you chose a wrong path and admittedly absconded and now being placed in a precarious position of making amends. It is exactly like sowing in the wind and reaping in the whirlwind.

For any future appointments, proper relieving orders and experience certificate issued by the present employer is a must. So, try to convince your employer by politely admitting your mistake made out of urgency and seek permission for rejoining subject to the conditions, if any, imposed by him.

Dear Ishak,

First and foremost, reply to the company within the stipulated time with your intention of joining back. You will have to show positive intentions from your side. There may be some conditions that the company will imply on your joining back, and you shall have to do so in a positive spirit.

The company has shown a positive response by saying that they need you to rejoin. Therefore, please reply saying that you shall be joining back and you intend to withdraw your resignation.

Saying this, going ahead in your career, kindly do not take things for granted. The person leaving should do so in a dignified manner and with due respect to the company.

Hello Ishak,

Frankly, you are surely lucky that the organization has given you the option to join back. Many companies just send the show-cause or termination notice. Just thank your stars and grab the chance.

Like Umakanthan.M mentioned, there doesn't seem to be absolutely anything 'personal' about your overseas trip, as you mentioned. I also find another aspect of what you mentioned a bit odd: "......unfortunately my visa got cancelled....". Any country cancels the visa already issued only due to clearly illegal acts by the individual. Does this remark of yours point to something else? It could also mean 'deported'.
