A good background checking company would usually follow the following process for verification of degree certificates from colleges/universities:
- The verification must be done from the source, i.e., the college or university itself.
- An audit trail of the verification process would normally be maintained. This audit trail would ensure that, at a minimum, all communications and documents sent to and received from universities, colleges, and institutions for confirmation of qualifications, certifications, and memberships are retained on file.
- Verification against a periodically updated list of fake universities, colleges, and institutes.
Very often, colleges and universities do not respond promptly. Therefore, there is a need to undertake personal follow-up and, over time, build relationships with the office of the Registrar to get prompt responses. This becomes a differentiator for background checking companies due to a quicker turnaround time.
Some background checking companies do not have an all-India presence. These companies try to cover areas where they are not located through partner firms who do the groundwork on behalf of the background checking company.
