All seniors kindly tell me about HR success and what should I do to become a successful HR as I just completed my MBA and working for 4 months only and I have to lead towards IR and LW.
It is nice to hear from a budding professional about his desire to be a successful HR. It all depends upon how you define success. Success means many things to many people. Is it climbing up the career ladder fast? Or winning the employees' trust and support for HR initiatives like building a culture of commitment and gratitude that drives performance to realize organizational goals? Or is it developing competencies to create fault-free procedures in HR functioning? Or is it a combination of all? Delve into the subject for your conceptual clarity and set a long-term goal. In the meantime, set some immediate or short-term goals that can serve as stepping stones to achieve your long-term goal. There is no secret formula for success. However, for success in whatever you desire, you need to have basic traits which are:
1) Be passionate about HR. It should come straight from the heart. You should enjoy being in HR. You should take to HR as a duck takes to water. Only then is it possible to achieve excellence. Unless you excel in what you do, it is difficult to succeed.
2) Develop an aptitude for HR. It is easy to develop an aptitude for those who are passionate about HR. HR aptitude means developing a flair for people-related issues.
3) Develop the right attitude. The right attitude involves taking the initiative to walk the extra mile to learn new things in HR and developing a solution-centric thinking since problems keep coming at you in HR.
4) Understand what the key skills required for HR are to meet business challenges. For example, finding talent and retaining it is a challenge that corporates are facing in the competitive service sector. Thus, the key skill to address the problem is talent management skill.
5) After finding out the key skills, find a mentor who can guide you in acquiring these skills. Read material from all possible sources on these skills and discuss with your mentor or a senior leader.
6) Keep abreast of new trends in HR by either reading, attending seminars, joining professional clubs, or participating in social media discussions.
7) Realize that Rome was not built in a day and learning is a continuous process. Success does not happen overnight, but it will definitely happen.
