Hi,

I have received a job offer for a teaching position in Malaysia on a 2-year contract. I am interested in transitioning to a software development role after 6 months. My plan is to join a software development company in Malaysia after 5 months. Is it possible to terminate the current teaching contract after 6 months in Malaysia? I would appreciate guidance on this matter.

Thanks a lot.

Dear Muruhan,

Is the teaching job a way of getting into Malaysia? Ask your conscience whether what you are considering is ethically right. That is, fully knowing that you do not want to continue in the teaching post, is it right to take up the job and then quit? How would you feel if the school were to terminate you after 6 months? It all depends upon how the contract is worded.

Hi KMuruhan,

Yes, you can terminate your contract with a 6-week notice period as per the Malaysian Labor Act. Please check the "Termination Clause" carefully before signing the contract. Teaching is a different profile than a commercial organization, and it's very sensitive.

I know many try to get whatever they can to come aboard, but I would ask you to choose the right industry and field before you jump. Wish you all the best.

Having said that, Malaysia is a great country to work.

We can help you in recognizing your way to move ahead from the stage where you are standing today, but won't be able to do so until you share your present situation/stage with us, which you have not shared yet.

I believe before answering your question we must have proper and correct information about you, your educational qualifications, and your present work profile/experience because your present query lacks this information. Therefore, I request you to provide the same.

You have a job related to TEACHING in Malaysia but are seeking "Software Development Jobs," which are totally different functions that need clarification too. Also, you need to recognize where you are standing today and where you want to go, in other words, your career goal/area of interest, which are really important and hold a lot of value in terms of CAREER.

A few more pieces of information need to be shared with us by answering the following questions:

- What do the contract terms and conditions say about your question?
- How many days/months have you been working with them or the period you have completed till now?
- Why did you agree to this contract if you were not interested in going with it?
- What made you feel the need for this change or wanting to cancel the contract?
- What is your main work/area of function, and how much total work experience do you have?
- By working as a Teaching faculty, do you think your educational qualifications align with your career goals?

Looking forward to your answers.

Hi Kmuruhan,

It is unethical for you to leave the college or university after they gave you a 2-year contract. Actually, it is not about the college but it's your responsibility to complete the cycle/semester so that the students have the right moment to study. Changing the lecturer/teacher during the semester is very painful for the college and the students.

My advice to you is to complete at least one academic year cycle before you leave the college/university. Please think carefully before making the decision. Be a responsible person so that people will respect you.
