it demands versatility in dealing with human minds, you must be conversant with law and order. you must act as a cushioning agent between admin staff and subordinates. you must able to tackle the situation under every given unfavorable/unforeseen eventuality. communication skill/articulation is a must.

Resp Alpanaji,
You can think of undergoing a short duration programme on HR from IIM-A, Ahmedabad, which is very much useful as well it has great backhome utility. Management Associtions associated with Indian Management Association, are also coducting Reputed HR Programmes and award Diplomas.
To me attempting other short-term remedies, such programmes are real value addition.

Dear Alpana,
First of all you do not need to switch job to get an generalist profile. If you want a wider role, participate in other activities such as T&D, PMS, etc once you get a hold of it you can apply for a job or ask your manager to increase your job responsibilities. Its your will to work more that matters not the profile you have.

If you are currently working with a Recruitment Consultancy firm, but are qualified MBA - HR, you may consider applying for an HR Executive job advertised by a mid/ large size company. Be frank in your interview in telling that your experience is only as a recruiter, but you are keen & qualified to take on HR generalist role in addition to any type of work related to recruitment. You may be able to seek an entry into the organization. Be completed dedicated to learn about various issues connected with employee life cycle management. The best would be to start understanding the HR Policies & processes of the organization, especially those connected with Joining/ on-boarding, attendance & Leave, payroll, performance management, incentives & training of employees. Thereafter, study organizational structure and the processes related to manpower planning, compensation planning, career planning & succession planning. If any HR technology solutions are in use, it will be desirable for you to learn about the same (especially the M I S reports used for planning). Equally important it would be for you to understand the complaints management process in the organization since that relates to employee satisfaction & impacts directly on the efficiency of business operations.

And if you are not in a recruitment firm, you don't really need to switch over to another company. Discuss with your boss your desire to take on additional responsibilities in the HR department.

In either case, your willingness to put in extra effort to learn new things is a pre-requisite to move forward. Remember, HR is too vast & dynamic in its scope and learning here is an unending process. HR policies & processes differ from one organization to another; only some concepts remain the same. Therefore, continuity in the same organization is necessary for an HR professional to contribute as a business partner.
