I am an MBA Prof with 4 years exp in HR. I started off with a consultancy and then joined a finance company. To be frank i am underpaid as my pay is still 15k. I am desperately looking for more areas of expertise other than recruitment but i am stuck up here. Please suggest what I need to do to get better pay and select my course of action as I feel really depressed with the way things are going. I have applied to many job sites but in vain. What is it that I need to change? Please suggest

Thank you for the advice.. But i doubt the genuineness of the vacancies in these sites..Moreover , what i need to know is if its something in the skill set that doesn't attract the employers or is it the Industry ....I request all those who have viewed to suggest.

I am not sure 'HOW' did you judge that you are 'underpaid'. Could you pl elaborate?
In general, pl note that the CTC of any professional depends on a lot of factors--NOT just one's Degree or experience level--many of which MAY NOT be in the individual's control, like the location, domain/sector, general global business environment, etc
However, this is NOT to deny that you COULD be underpaid--would like to understand your logic better to channel your thought process in the right direction.

I feel you are a bit obsessed with the pay bit.

Let's first look at your qualifications. MBA! What were your subjects? What institute did you graduate from? How did you fare? As a MASTER did you acquire the ability to carry out an appreciation of a situation and deduce the causes leading to it?

If yes, you would have realised that today the world is full of MBAs! It's a supply and demand situation. The employer has the option of picking out from the vast multitude.

So first, calm down and lift yourself out of depression. You are lucky to have a job! Second, start enjoying your job instead of moping around. When you start enjoying things your performance improves. You become value for money to your employer. That is when you become eligible for a raise. You have to show results! Productivity is the key!! Thirdly, improve your qualification, if you can. In today's environment a plain MBA is just that. A plain MBA.

I do not wish to denigrate your credentials but want to bring you down to reality. Please shake your self out of depression, roll up your sleeves and get to work. The very fact that you have had the courage to question your position on this forum, I think you have the makings for improvement. So go ahead my friend and do it.

Your salary doesn't necessarily reflect your calibre. Probably you compared your pay with those of your batchmates and friends, some or may be most of whom you knew were probably not as good as you and came to the conclusion that you were underpaid. Moreover as a recruiter you would have got to know about the salary of lot of people whom you would have had a chance to gauge through telephonic / direct screening. Assuming these have happened it is only natural to be depressed; but the sooner you come out of your mood, the better. Take it as a passing phase of your career and grab the opportunities that come your way. It is important to view your current job from a long term / strategic point, while leaving an eye open for opportunities outside. Try to take up more responsibilities whenever there is a chance. Who knows your management may then think of handing over some of the HR generalist roles to you and may be hire a fresher to help you out on recruitment. At the end of the day it's the attitude that makes the difference! Do a good job and results will follow.

Thank you all for the response.. I noticed all the respected suggestions meant on one point - Attitude .. yes, i do believe in the same but at times the reality grills me down. Talking about the MBA , yes there are many out there. But i was down as in the present finance company i was employed for 2 years. Started with 10 k and now 15k. While a new joinee with just 1 year exp , joined us who was the reference of the CEO , got in for 25k !!!....that too her roles are not much. I dont get the logic. Am not making a comparison , as my job involves a lot of travelling , targets etc. Apart from this i also have developed policies etc. These matters are a matter of concern when you feel really down. I noticed that favoritism has a better role than hard work. Suggest if i still need to stick on with HOPE or move on ??....

Dear Mr. Greek John,

Please understand that there is not worth a much concern in your case. There are many ways to stipulate your thoughts.One which is your struggling with dilemma on your salary and if you may like to speak with your concerned HR (your way) to resolve it.

You may like to use the certain steps that I have heard from some employees doing this.

- Keep a track of all the accomplishments that you have acheived since the last employee evaluation. Make sure that your notes speaks affirmative about you. You may keep this to speak out your deeds while you outcome this in front of the employer or the concerned.

- Make sure you express when you list your ideas saying that you performed your best last and and evn better this time. DONOT give an impression that you are sharing your ideas with the sole purpose of gaining an increased pay but you got to make it look like as if you are working to prosper the company.

- MAJORILY, before you tend to do this... pl make a competitive search for performing comparable tasks of you getting paid when compared with that of the other competitors paying for the similiar position. But if you tend to find that your employer is paying below than what the market competitors are paying then be prepared to show all the above sorted by you.

[Do not give the employer a reason to encourage you to explore your options with the competition (you'll be at stake). Rather, prompt your employer that you are WORTH than the other professionals in your field of expertise are making.

Thank you Sharmila ...Regarding talking to my senior i have done that many times... But all is returned through a smile and a pat in the back. But at the same time people who are closely related to the senior are given a better pay etc. In short a feeling of taking me for granted has come in , as i am the the all in all point of contact for all matters irrespective if its HR.
