Hi All,
I'm working for an aluminium & glass facade engineering company in Kerala. We are one of the leading fabricator and installer of aluminium work in India. We at times have more than 20 labourers on a contract basis working at a particular site. We have a works licence. I just want to know if there is a need to apply for a labour licence, what are the formalities, and do we need to renew it every year.
Regards,

Since you are engaging about 20 workmen at site of another employer (referred to as Principal employer) the provisions of Contract Labour (Regulation & Abolition) Act will apply to you. Therefore, you have to take licence under the said Act. Licence is granted by the District Labour Officer (Eranakulam) on submission of prescribed application along with fees and form V which is given by the Principal employer. Please note that your client/ Principal employer should have taken Registration to engage contractors. Then only they can issue form V which states that you have been appointed as contractor.
The licence is granted for one year and is to be renewed every year following the same procedure.
